What is the source of fuel for the ATP/PC system?

PC - Phosphocreatine

10
Is the ATP production efficient or inefficient for the ATP system?

Efficient

10

What is the duration that the ATP/PC system can operate?

10-20 seconds of maximal/submaximal work

10

What is the main cause of fatigue for the ATP/PC system?

Depletion of Phosphocreatine stores
20

Once ATP is broken down to release energy it is split into....?

Adenosine Diphosphate and a Phosphate molecule

20

How many ATP molecules are produced for 1 glucose molecule?

1 ATP molecule for 1 Glucose molecule.

20

Please give us 2 events where the ATP/PC system is used.

- 100m Sprint

- Discus

- Shotput

- Long jump

Why does the depletion of PC lead to fatigue?

The depletion of PC leads to the inability to synthesise ATP for energy as phosphate molecules cannot be synthesised in the muscles.

30

Using the words Triphosphate, Biphosphate, and Phosphocreatine, explain how ATP is synthesised.

An Adenosine Triphosphate molecule is turned into an ADP (Adenosine Diphosphate) molecule as a phosphate is utilised for quick energy. Phosphocreatine is then used to synthesise a phosphate molecule to turn ADP back into ATP to be used for energy once again.

30

Give us one advantage and one disadvantage of the ATP production of the ATP/PC system.

ADVANTAGE: Fast rate of ATP production

DISADVANTAGE: Limited ATP supply (Fast rate of fatigue)

30

Why can the ATP system no longer operate after 10-12 Seconds of work?

After 10-12 seconds, the PC in the muscles has been depleted and the Phosphate molecules have been used for immediate energy. Once the phosphate molecules are used up, the body has to wait for another Phosphate molecule to be created, which takes 2-5 minutes (for full recovery).

30

After PC stores are depleted, how long does it take to recover?

It takes 30 seconds - 2 minutes to restore both ATP and PC. After 30 seconds, they are partially restored, whereas after 2 minutes they are fully restored.
