What is the AZA?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. AZA is the independent accrediting organization for Zoos and Aquariums.

What animals are Code Red? 

Green: Less dangerous animal escape; no lethal weapons needed. Non-collection animals (dog, cat, raccoon, deer) inside exhibit space.

Explain SAFE and SSP

Saving Animals From Extinction focuses on saving animals and habitats in the wild and leverages the massive audiences of, and collective expertise within, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums. Examples of SAFE species: Cheetah, black-footed ferret, maned wolf, red panda, N American songbird, coral, whooping crane, and amphibians.

Species Survival Plan: cooperative animal management, breeding, and conservation effort that works to ensure genetically diverse, self-sustaining populations of more than 500 species of animals.

What do you do if an animal escapes at SCBI?

In the event of a code green animal escape immediately notify the duty curator.

How do you report inappropriate workplace behavior (harassment, discrimination, retaliation)?

Tell the harasser (orally or in writing) to stop, keep a record of the events, report the behavior to a supervisor or manager, and cooperate in the inquiry;

Immediately discuss the issue with someone in their supervisory chain to determine the course of action. 

Report the incident to the Human Resources Liaison or HR Human Capital Manager.

Emergency shelter=Auditorium basement

Watch: Normal business operations with heightened monitoring of radio, weather reports, LivSafe app alerts, etc.

Warning: Secure animals, seek safe shelter, direct guests. Maintain radio silence unless reporting critical information.

Explain Enrichment

Enrichment ensures that the behavioral and physical needs of an animal are being met. Provides animals a creative outlet for species appropriate behaviors, physical activity and mental exercise, as well as choice and control over how they spend their time. Examples: puzzle feeders to forage for food, climbing structures that enhance habitats, and training sessions where animals can interact with keepers. Types: Habitat, cognitive, sensory, food, toys.

How can you report an Animal Welfare concern?

Animal welfare refers to an animal’s collective physical, mental, and emotional states over a period of time, and is measured on a continuum from good to poor.

1. Report and escalate your concern as needed. For example, speak with the Animal Keeper, Curator, Senior Curator, Deputy Director, Director, as needed.

2. Report concern to Veterinarian, Chief Nutritionist, or any Animal Welfare Committee member.

3. Complete an Animal Welfare Concern Form (available on ZooNet). Submit form to any ACUC  member or anonymously to the Welfare Committee Chair, Dr. Betsy Herrelko, Animal Welfare and Research Curator.

Safety Data Sheets. Provide information on the hazards of working with a chemical and procedures that should be used to ensure safety. SDSs are a primary source of information regarding chemical hazards and handling. Stored in a binder, in each area, that is easily accessible by all staff.
