Why do we need to learn the topic "Gerund and Infinitive"

After certain verbs we use Gerund (I prefer doing....), after other verbs we use Infinitive (I expect to...)
If we use "to" after verbs that should be followed by gerund, natives might think you have an intention to do st.
If we use "ing" after verbs that should be followed by Infinitive", natives might think you have experience doing sth, not intention.
