Reproduction in prokaryotic cells is called __________

binary fission
100

Is binary fission an example of sexual or asexual reproduction?  Explain your answer.

asexual; only 1 organism required (it splits into 2)

100

Explain why DNA Replication is described as semi-conservative

the newly made DNA has 1 old (parent) DNA strand + 1 new (daughter) DNA strand

200

What information would the locus of a gene reveal to an observer?

where the gene is LOCATED (LOCUS)

200

Describe the characteristics of asexual reproduction

-only 1 organism needed

-one of the simplest/fastest forms of reproduction

200

Explain what semi-conservative replication means.

it means half is 'old' (parent strand) and other half is 'new' (daughter strand); both strands = 1 newly replicated chromosome

300

Describe prokaryotic chromosomes. (Shape? How many strands?)

entire chromosome is circular, with 2 strands

300

Why must DNA be replicated before binary fission is completed? (ONLY ANSWER THIS PART OF QUESTION)

each cell MUST have DNA in it!

300

Why do bacterial populations grow rapidly under ideal conditions? (only answer this question)

under ideal conditions, environment is PERFECT for bacterial growth--temperature is ideal, there is enough nutrients to grow, enough oxygen/space etc

400

What information is contained in a gene?

the instructions on how to code for proteins
400

What would happen if DNA was not replicated before the bacterial cells split in binary fission?

without DNA the cell would stop working as it is like an empty vessel (no instructions for cell to do work)

400

Provide an example of how rapid bacterial growth (because of an ideal environment) can lead to bacterial infections.

The human body is the perfect 'petri dish' for bacterial growth--warm/moist environment with plenty of nutrients for single-celled bacteria to grow.

So when one pathogenic bacteria enters our system (and does not get defeated by our good bacteria or immune system) it is bound to lead to rapid bacteria growth which means infection for us :(
