It took Mr. Davis the longest to complete this instrument proficiency exam. He had to transpose the horn parts on the spot from the score and cried because of it during the exam. He thinks he maybe should have practiced it more, but is thankful they allowed him to pass after the tears dried up.
This instrument, made by hammering a mixture of metals (made up of mostly copper) into a kettle-drum shape, gradually made its way into the orchestra around the 17th century. Composers like Mozart and Haydn began to use it frequently in their works, cementing this very important percussion instrument into the orchestral sound. It was an easy addition to the concert band, given that it can provide a pitched bass line for the percussion section.

One of the lowest members of the woodwind section, this instrument came to us from the "shawm" in the 16th century. It only had three holes to begin with, but now there are so many that it is hard to keep track of, especially given that you cannot look down and see them very easily. This instrument is one that is one of the most difficult instruments to master, but is one that can make you lots of money due to its rarity.
Mixed meter: Eighth notes can be divided into 2+2+3 or 2+3+2 or 3+2+2.
