What is therapy?
Treatment of an illness
Psychodynamicc Therapy
exploring how unconscious patterns and early relationships impact current thoughts, emotions, and behaviors
Behavior Therapy Goal
to increase or decrease the targeted behavior.
Cogntive Behavior Therapy
It combines the thought-changing process of cognitive therapy with the behavior modification process of behavior therapy
Group Therapy
Efficiency: it saves clients’ money and the therapists’ time.
• Experimentation: it allows clients to try out new behaviors in a social
context more like the real world.
• Sense of belonging: it allows members to see that others share their
problems and that they are not alone.
• Feedback: clients can receive feedback from people who are not the
therapist.
What is a theory of psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy refers to speaking about one’s difficulties to a trained professional to achieve personal growth.
Humanistic Therapy Goal?
to reduce the inner conflicts that interfere with natural development and growth.”
Behavior Therapy Techniques
Exposure therapy: changing the reactions of people by repeatedly exposing them to a stimulus
that triggers aversive reactions.
•Systematic desensitization: the most popular form of exposure therapy. It consists of teaching
a client to relax and having them employ that relaxation technique in an escalating series of
exposures to an unwanted stimulus.
•Aversive conditioning: to help one learn what they should not do, an unpleasant response is
added to a harmful stimulus.
What is insight?
the ability to gain a deep and accurate understanding of oneself, others, or situations
Family Therapy
Many therapists choose to specialize in working
with families. These family therapists usually view
the family as a system in which each member
affects all other members and vice versa.
Physoanalysis therapy goal
To make the unconscious conscious to release stored up energy from id-ego-superego conflicts
Humanistic Therapy Techniques
Active Listening: when the therapist paraphrases what the client says to both seek clarification and inform the client that he or she is paying attention.
1.Paraphrase
2. Invite Clarification
3. Reflect Feelings
•Physical contact with the client
•Nondirective approach
•Silence
o Philosophy-Places a greater emphasis on conscious thoughts rather than unconscious ones
Cognitive Therapy Goal
to change the thoughts of clients to be more adaptive to life circumstances
Cognitive Behavior Therapy Technique
Socratic dialogue: posing open-ended questions to clients with the aim of getting
clients to reflect on their own personal issues and arrive at their own
conclusions.
• Argumentation: while continuing to show unconditional positive regard, the
therapist argues with some of the foolish thoughts of the client.
• Changing language: replacing “musts” and “demands” with “preferences”.
• Psychoeducation
Family System Theory
a model that views a family as an interconnected emotional unit where each member's behavior affects the whole system
Techniques involved in Psychoanalysis therapy?
•Free Association: a method of unconscious excavation where someone freely narrates everything that
comes to mind while the therapist tries to identify resistances and make interpretations.
•Paying attention to resistances: in other words, trying to locate where the patient is hiding sensitive material.
The idea is that the unconscious limits what we have access to through defense mechanisms and that these
defense mechanisms should be investigated
3 essential therapeutic conditions
empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence
Cognitive Therapy Techniques
Stress Inoculation Training: teaching clients
to restructure their thinking in stressful
situations. They can do this by literally “talk
back” in their heads to their negative
thoughts.
The 3 musts of irrational beliefs
