However, they have not reported it to you prior to this interaction with them as they are fearful of retaliation.

Scenario: You are in your room when your resident knocks on the door. They say they are worried they have bed bugs because they have had multiple bites on their legs and they googled it and it looks like it.

-Ask clarifying questions to help with the report: How long has this been happening? Have you seen any bugs? Are the other residents of the space also getting bit?, Have you spent a lot of time in other rooms? Are they having similar problems?
-Tell the resident and their roommates to stay in their room and that someone will be by to check their room. Do NOT offer a temp space or give a timeline.
-Do NOT confirm that these are bed bugs!

Scenario: You are talking to Room 10 on your floor, helping them fill out their roommate agreement for the year. You are almost done and when you ask if there are any other final points to add, Resident A states that Resident B needs to microwave their food downstairs because their “ethnic” food makes the room smell funny.

-Remind the residents the microwave is shared and that certain foods cannot be excluded unless everyone in the room agrees.
-If there is a medical reason, have the student go through the RD and Student Disability Services for an accommodation.
-Have a candid conversation with the resident on how that comment may make a resident feel and how it can be interpreted and how it can hurt the space.

Scenario: You are about to walk out of the building to lunch when you see your resident walking into the building. You greet them and ask them how their day is. As they are talking you realize they are holding a cat in their hand. They have never owned a cat to your knowledge prior to this.

-Ask if the animal is a service animal required for a disability. If the answer is yes, you can ask what work or task the animal has been trained to do.
-If the answer is yes to both, the RA should ask if the service animal is registered to live on campus, and contact the RDOC and/or contact their RD depending on work hours to see if this animal is registered to be in the building.
-If the answer is no for both, the RA can ask if their animal is registered to live in housing and the RA should call the RDOC and/or contact their RD depending on work hours to see if this animal is registered to be in the building.
-If the animal is not registered to live on campus the student may be asked to remove the animal until they go through Student Disability Center Accommodations
