In 1634, farmers in the Chesapeake Bay region imported white and black indentured servants and later, enslaved Africans to profitably grow this crop. It became an impor- tant export crop because of its popularity in Europe. In Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, vast areas were devoted to this crop. Plantation owners imported large num- bers of enslaved blacks to cultivate it, dry its leaves, and pack it for transport to the market. Name this crop.
