Based on a set of principles that focus on maintaining student dignity and keeping people safe.
What is Pro-ACT
You all know, this is what we do all day every day here. The focus is crisis communication and doing what we can to prevent further escalation.
Reminder: Pro_ACT training for new staff 1/21, 1/28, and 1/31 at admin :)
True or False
Rewards are always reinforcers.
What is False
A reward is only a reinforcer if it increases the future frequency of behavior. That's why the whole school token economy is so useful- kids want the money so they frequently engage in expected behaviors.
Earning points, preferred activities, vending, etc. that increases the future frequency of behavior.
What is Reinforcement
Adding or taking something away that increases the future frequency of behavior means that it is a reinforcer
Ignoring the student, not the behavior.
What is planned ignoring.
This is appropriate to use when the function of the behavior is attention meaning the student is engaging in the behavior in order to get attention. If the student is not engaging in the behavior for attention, planned ignoring might not be the best intervention.
What scientist conditioned their dogs to salivate?
Who is Ivan Pavlov
Avoidance of physical contact with an escalated student
What is evasion.
Primary intervention for responding to students who are attempting or are making physical contact when the contact would not result in immediate, serious injury. Evasion reduces the likelihood of creating trauma or of re-triggering or re-traumatizing students with prior trauma history.
The four functions of behavior that are the WHY behind specific behaviors.
What are escape, attention, tangible (access), and sensory.
EATS
This is good to consider because if the function of the behavior is escape, planned ignoring isn't necessarily going to be effective. If the the function is attention, offering an escape isn't necessarily going to work...
Activity, attention, tangible, etc. that decrease the future frequency of behavior.
What is PUNISHMENT
Adding or taking something away that decreases the future frequency of behavior means it is a punisher. Punishment is less effective than reinforcement and should be used as last resort. Instead we want to reinforce the behaviors that we want to see increase.
An attempt to get the student to engage in a behavior different from the one they are engaging in. Techniques include teacher talk, talking about preferred topics, and distraction.
What is redirection.
Rather than engaging with the student about the behavior they are exhibiting, we point out what we want them to be doing instead. (this looks different based on age)
He is remembered for his research on the conditioning process, as well as the Little Albert experiment, in which he demonstrated that a child could be conditioned to fear a previously neutral stimulus
Who is John Watson

What is the assault cycle.
When dealing with an escalated and aggressive student, it's important to consider where they are in the assault cycle. This will affect the ways in which we interact and communicate with hem.
This is when reinforcers can be exchanged for a different reinforcer. Please provide an example.
What is a token economy system.
A student receives stickers for having a safe body, after a week of safe body the student will go to froyo or starbucks.
A-B-C three term contingency
What is Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence?
Antecedent- What happens BEFORE behavior
Behavior- What the student does
Consequence- Result of the student engaging in the behavior
We have ABC data sheets for new students or students exhibiting a behavior that we want to track to determine the function of the behavior.
Withholding reinforcement for a previous reinforced behavior.
What is extinction.
For example, if the function of the behavior is attention, we withhold attention for the target behavior.
I.e. Ms. Brittney screams anytime she wants attention from a teacher. Now when Brittney screams, staff ignore the behavior thus placing it on extinction.
Who are the founding fathers of Behaviorism?
Who are John Watson, B.F. Skinner, and Ivan Pavlov
The word you never say on the walkie in a non-emergency? And provide an alternate way to ask for help.
What is STAFF.
Other things to consider:
Starting a sentence with "attention" or "I need"
The tone of your voice when asking for something on the radio.
Scenario:
10 kids are in the classroom, all sitting in their seat, one student is needing prompting but the rest are doing what they need to be doing... There are 4 staff and one needs to go on lunch... is it okay to send one staff to lunch?.... What if one staff is on lunch and student needs a break, do you need to call for push in?
You can send the staff to lunch and have one staff with a student on a break. Yes, this leaves 2 staff with 9 students, but they are all doing what they need to be doing for the most part. Ratio becomes an issue when the kids are outside/playground/field, or when multiple kids are "bubbling".
Behavior assessment that seeks to determine the FUNCTION of behavior
What is Functional Behavior Assessment?
This is what we do when we are trying to figure out WHY a student is engaging in a behavior and from there we can determine the best way to respond to the target behaviors.

What is modeling?
We physically show the student what the behavior looks like. Ms. Alex is modeling raising a quiet hand by raising her hand and drawing attention to the fact that her mouth is closed.
Who created a "baby tender" for their daughter to stay warm through the cold Minnesota nights?
*Hint: A founding father of Behaviorism and "baby tender" was also called "Skinner Box"
Who is B.F. Skinner
Primary intervention for assisting students in moving away from assaultive behavior toward safe behavior.
What is Crisis Communication
Arguably the most important principle of Pro-ACT. What we do through out our day to help our students remain safe and, hopefully, access their curriculum and ACE program.
Watch the following video and list at least FIVE things that staff did wrong. You will get 100 points for each correct response. We will allow extra time for you to respond.

The behavior wasn't unsafe- being obnoxious is a constitutional right
Communication- Staff weren't really sure what the other was doing
We DON'T say LOSING YOUR POINTS- they are choosing not to earn their points, we don't take things away
Why were they arguing with the student? Was that a threat they made to him?
How about that escort.... Fist of all, escort was not necessary as the behavior wasn't unsafe. Second of all, how about that ratio? Angel is a foot taller than Brittney and Alex.
BIP
What is Behavior Intervention Plan
Plan for addressing the behavior in question, how staff should respond to the target behavior, what we want to reinforce instead of the target behavior, etc.
DAILY DOUBLE!!!!!

What is Shaping
Shaping is reinforcing successive approximations to the target behavior.
