How does learning occur?

"The _____ Principle says that the opportunity to engage in a more valued activity reinforces engaging in a less valued activity, where "value" is defined in terms of the amount or responding or time spent on the activity in the absence of reinforcement."

The Premack Principle

Identify the law being described:

A response is not made to a stimulus when the connection strength is weakened or forgotten

The law of disuse

____ is the reassortment of processes in a complex situation

learning

What are the three key processes in self-regulated learning?

self-monitoring, self-instruction, self-reinforcement

200

Identify the law being described:

A response to a stimulus strengthens their connection

The law of use

200

What is the A-B-C model?

A (antecedent) -> B(behavior)->C(consequence)

300

What broad program has been commonly applied in diverse contexts to promote adaptive behaviors?

Behavior modification programs

Identify the unconditioned stimulus, the conditioned stimulus, the unconditioned response and the conditioned response:

A child receives a flu shot from a clinic which is very painful and makes them cry. A few weeks later the child returns to the clinic and cries at the sight of the needle.

US: flu shot

UR: crying from the flu shot

CS: associating the needle with getting a shot

CR: crying at the sight of the needle

Identify what is being described:

You are walking to class and you see a white food truck pass by as you're almost to class. You check your watch and realize you have 1 minute until class starts so you start running. In the future when you're walking to class if the truck passes by you immediately check your watch to see if you're late for class.

contiguity- implies that a behavior in a situation will be repeated when that situation recurs (Schunk, 90).

400

This occurs when learners verbally instruct themselves what to do and then perform the appropriate behavior.

Cognitive behavior modification

What is being described:

A child is conditioned to cry at the sight of a needle when at the doctors office. Now whenever the child is at the doctor's office, the child cries when they see any small metal object being used on them.

Identify the process being described:

An individual can run 4-5 miles for their exercise. This individual wants to run a marathon in the next year. There is a training program that is available that includes a few shorter races and even a half marathon between now and the time of the desired marathon that this individual could compete in to gage their progress. As time goes on the training can be altered based on the progress of this individual.
