Primary job is to provide the overall “vision” of the show and to work with all the other different creative elements (actors, lighting designer, costumer, special effects, stage manager, musicians, sound designer, makeup, wigs, choreographer, etc.) to achieve that vision.

What is the Director?

Must be familiar with the workings of everyone involved in the show- all actors and technical areas. Their job is to make sure everyone is on the same page and doing their respective jobs properly. They also “call the cues” during each performance to make sure everything is done properly and at the right time to ensure that the show runs smoothly.

What is the Stage Manager?

Responsible for creating the dances and stage movement in the show that not only looks good with the music, but also helps develop the characters and tell the story.

What is the Choreographer?

Must work primarily with the director, makeup designer, wig designer, Lighting designer, and set designer to develop costumes that portray the actor as the character in terms of the time period and style of the characters in the show.

What is the Costume Designer?

Is responsible for working primarily with the director, costumer, lighting designer, and choreographer to design plans to build scenery that helps establish all elements of the environment of the story being told.

What is the Scenic Designer?

Is responsible for working primarily with the director, set designer, costumer, and choreographer to help provide the proper lighting effects to establish the mood, atmosphere and emotions involved in the scenes of a show.

What is the Lighting Designer?

Job is to provide/create any special effects needed for the show, such as fog, explosions, fire or any “magic” that might occur.


What is the Special Effects Designer?

Responsible for helping the actors and orchestra to learn and coordinate all aspects of music involved in the show, including singing and orchestral music.

What is the Music Director/Conductor?

Responsible for making sure every sound in the show is heard and understood as effectively as possible. They must balance the sound of the actors vs, the orchestra, and they must insert all sound effects at just the right time.


What is the Sound Designer/Sound Board Operator?

Responsible for making the actors faces and any other body parts (arms, necks, legs, etc) look like the characters they are portraying.


What is the Makeup Designer?

Job is to provide/make wigs or design hair styles for all actors to make them look like and portray their characters as effectively as possible.
