The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 allowed the the President to imprison people for saying things he didn't like and deport people from foreign countries if the U.S. was at war. These laws were super popular and actually got John Adams elected again.

UM ACTUALLY, people really hated these laws and led to John Adams not getting elected and his whole political party falling apart.
