What is one way cultural humility is different than cultural competency?

Belief that there is an end-product. vs. Commitment to a lifelong learning process.

Thinking you know everything there is to know. vs. Knowing that you don’t have all the answers– and you probably never will.

Belief that after training, reading, learning etc. you can be an expert in an identity that is not your own. “I’m the expert.” vs. Acknowledging you can never be an expert in an identity or experience that is not your own. “You’re the expert.”

Can result in a monolithic view of a culture or identity. vs. Recognizes and honors intersectionality.

Can promote an “us” versus “them” mindset that maintains fear and anxiety related to interacting across difference. vs. Willingness to engage with those who have identities, experiences and values different from your own.

Doesn’t address bias, power, or privilege. vs. Acknowledges bias, power, and privilege.

What is one thing you should do and one thing you shouldn't do to navigate the ambiguity of gender diversity?

Don't...

- Generalize one nonbinary or trans experience to another.

- Expect gender diverse people to do the work for you.

- Demand or make it required for someone to disclose their pronouns.

- Ignore your privilege and social location.

- Assume someone's pronouns or gender identity based on their gender expression or presentation.

Do...

- Do your research and expand your social feeds with gender diverse perspectives (Ensure you are doing so with an intersectional lens!)

- Offer your pronouns when introducing yourself in new spaces. This has the opportunity to create safety and an ambiguous invitation for folks to share their own pronouns.

- Ask questions in general! Be respectful and lead with curiosity but learn from your gender diverse peers!

- Support your gender diverse friends, family, and colleagues by offering yourself as a safe space of communication.

- Listen to, believe and amplify the voices and experiences of trans and non-binary people of colour.
