I was also known as Levi and was a tax collector by trade. I was contracted by the Roman Empire to collect taxes from my people, the Jews. Tax collectors were notorious for lying about how much people owed and pocketing the difference. Tax collectors were considered traitors, so I am sure that is what people thought of me. I was viewed as a traitor, a greedy person, a sinner and as a thief by many of my fellow countrymen. This may have been due to the fact that much of it was true! I was a Jew but I worked for the Romans. I worked in my own country, but I labored for a foreign government and because of this, I was considered to have the best interest of that nation at heart instead of my own, resulting in my own people despising me.
