WHAT IS WATCH NIGHT?
On the eve of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, worshippers gathered in black churches to pray, give thanks, and wait for the stroke of midnight when all slaves would officially be free. This tradition, celebrated on New Year’s Eve, continues to this day in many black churches - observed with prayer, music and dance.
