Gideon didn't have the look of a "mighty man of valor." Cowering silently in the winepress, Gideon felt and looked like anything other than valiant. God saw beyond the exterior, God knew who he was.

How does God choose an army?

The way into their blessing, discover, deliverance, or victory, could not be accompanied by fear. Fear and insecurity can spread like wildfire in a group. Gideon needed soldiers who were fully devoted and would not be distracted from their primary purpose by the desires of their flesh. Over time, unfocused soldiers might have begun to contaminate the others.
