The Bill of Rights.
If a defendant cannot afford one of these, one will be provided for them by the government.
A lawyer.
This amendment outlaws cruel and unusual punishments.
The Eighth Amendment.
This allows newspapers and other agencies to report or print news and express opinions.
Freedom of the press.
Protects you from an unreasonable search or seizure of your person, house, papers and effects.
The 4th Amendment.
The 5 freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment.
Speech, Assembly, Petition, Press, Religion.
Issued by a court or judge, this Allows the police to legally arrest, search or seize
A warrant.
This amendments gives citizens the right to bear arms, the right to own a gun.
The 2nd amendment.
The Constitutional Amendment that prevents citizens from being forced to quarter soldiers.
The 3rd Amendment.
Reserves for the states the powers not granted to the federal government.
The 10th amendment.
This amendment protects you from an unreasonable search.
The fourth amendment.
A group of citizens who decide on a court case.
A jury.
States that other rights and liberties not listed in the Constitution are kept by the people.
The 9th amendment.
Guarantees a right to a jury trial in civil cases.
The 7th Amendment.
Gives the people the right to peaceably assemble.
The 1st amendment.
Who wrote the bill of rights?
James Madison.
The individual responsible for swearing in each witness in a trial. Someone who maintains order and security in a courtroom. They are responsible for the safety of everyone in the courtroom, including judges, juries, and defendants.
The Bailiff.
You are told you must wait 3 years for a trial by a jury.This amendment prevents that from happening.
The 6th Amendment.
The government wants to take your home to build a road. Eminent domain guarantees you fair compensation due to this amendment.
The 5th amendment.
This allows people to ask the government to correct the ideas they do not agree with.
Freedom of petition.
When was the Bill of Rights ratified
December 15, 1791
This means people are given a trial by jury and can be provided a lawyer.
Due process.
A police officer pulls you over for speeding and swerving all over the road. He is allowed to search your car because of this.
Probable cause.
The Constitutional Amendment that gives you "the right to remain silent." (It also says you can't be tried twice for the same crime or be deprived (not given) of life, liberty or property without "due process of law".)
The 5th Amendment.
Laws that all 50 states must follow.
