What is the 1st amendment? 

Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, Freedom to peacefully assemble and petition the government.

The right to: 

  • A speedy trial by a jury 

  • Be informed of the charges 

  • An attorney

What are the bill of rights? 

The first 10 amendments to the U.S constitution.

The right to bear arms and form a militia

Everyone must have a trial by jury.

Why do we have the bill of rights? 

To protect the people of America from having their rights taken away by the government.

The right to refuse to quarter (house) soldiers in your house.

Protection from: 

  • Excessive Bails and fines 

  • Cruel and unusual punishments

The government has to have a warrant to search you and your belonging.

The rights listed are not the only rights given to the people.

You have the protection from 

  • Self incrimination (tell on yourself) 

  • Being tried for the same crime twice 

  • Prosecuted without an indictment 

  • Loss of property without compensation

The rest of the rights not given to the federal government are given to the states and the people of America.
