What is Science?
The systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world and its phenomena through observation and experiment.
Science is both a body of knowledge and a process.
law
explanation for how nature will behave under certain conditions, frequently written as an equation
anova
Test to determine if means from several groups are different• Only tells you if there is a difference but not between which groups• Typically a post-hoc test is done to then determine which of the groups have significant difference
R^2 value
linear regression (how reliable) line of best fit
correlation vs causation
correlation does not equal causation
Scientific Method
makes observations, hypotheses, predictions, experiment, analyze data
Belief
statement that is not scientifically provable. Beliefs may or may not be correct but they are outside the realm of science to test.
p value
probability value
the probability that the trend you are seeing is due to random chance.
parametric
regular distrubiton (height)
model orgamisms
short life
easily found
small size
reproduces quickly/ lots
easy to manage
resembles.
Fact
basic statement established by experiment or observation. All facts are true under the specific conditions of the observation.
Why do statistics?
Sampling so that you can make inferences to the population as a whole
The lower the p value
the greater the statistical significance
non-parametric
can make no assumptions about data distributions (fave color)
the _____ is the fundamental unit of ecology
nergy and materials with its environment
organism
Hypothosis
a tentative or proposed explanation that is TESTABLE
Statistical tests are limited by what
time, money, and available sample size.
p values significance
P values are generally significant < 0.05 or < 0.01 depending on circumstances
controlled experiment
control everything, change one variable
population
consists of many of the same type of organisms living together
Theory
an explanation so thoroughly tested and well supported that no new data is likely to alter it
students T- tests
Test to determine if means from several groups are different• Only tells you if there is a difference but not between which groups• Typically a post-hoc test is done to then determine which of the groups have significant difference
standard deviation
how much score deviate from mean
non controlled experiment
observational experiment ( weather)
community
is interactions among populations in the same place
