History of the Convention on Biological Diversity
At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for "sustainable development" -- meeting our needs while ensuring that we leave a healthy and viable world for future generations. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Convention Protocols
1. The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing is an international agreement which aims at sharing the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way.
2.The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is an international agreement which aims to ensure the safe handling, transport and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health.
When is the International Day for Biological Diversity?
What's new?
Statement by Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, on the occasion of the High-Level Segment, 15 December 2022
Can words on paper help protect biodiversity?
As policies, the words represent agreements and recommended actions at local, regional, national or international levels to protect particular habitats or organisms.
What are the main objectives of the CBD?
1. The conservation of biological diversity
2. The sustainable use of the components of biological diversity
3. The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources
What is Biological diversity?
Biological diversity or biodiversity is the term given to the variety of life on Earth and the natural patterns it forms.
What are the primary drivers of biodiversity?
Habitat loss
Invasive species
Overexploitation
Pollution
Climate change associated with global warming
What are the 4 different ways of measuring biodiversity?
Species Richness (Entire Region)
Genetic diversity
Endemic Species
Ecosystem diversity
True or False: At any time after one year from the date on which this Convention has entered into force for a Contracting Party, that Contracting Party may withdraw from the Convention by giving written notification to the Depositary.
FALSE.
At any time after two years from the date on which this Convention has entered into force for a Contracting Party, that Contracting Party may withdraw from the Convention by giving written notification to the Depositary. Any such withdrawal shall take place upon expiry of one year after the date of its receipt by the Depositary, or on such later date as may be specified in the notification of the withdrawal. Any Contracting Party which withdraws from this Convention shall be considered as also having withdrawn from any protocol to which it is party.
True or False: A State or a regional economic integration organization may become a Party to a protocol unless it is, or becomes at the same time, a Contracting Party to this Convention.
FALSE.
A State or a regional economic integration organization may not become a Party to a protocol unless it is, or becomes at the same time, a Contracting Party to this Convention. Decisions under any protocol shall be taken only by the Parties to the protocol concerned. Any Contracting Party that has not ratified, accepted or approved a protocol may participate as an observer in any meeting of the parties to that protocol.
True or False: The Contracting Parties shall cooperate in the formulation and adoption of protocols to this Convention.
TRUE.
Protocols are supplementary agreements to the CBD. Not just in the formulation and adoption, but also with regard to Amendments. Amendments to any protocol may be proposed by any Party to that protocol.
What is the jurisdictional scope of the CBD?
Subject to the rights of other States, and except as otherwise expressly provided in this Convention, the provisions of this Convention apply, in relation to each Contracting Party:
(a) In the case of components of biological diversity, in areas within the limits of its national jurisdiction; and
(b) In the case of processes and activities, regardless of where their effects occur, carried out under its jurisdiction or control, within the area of its national jurisdiction or beyond the limits of national jurisdiction.
What is the relationship of CBD’s Contracting Parties with other International Convention?
The provisions of this Convention shall not affect the rights and obligations of any Contracting Party deriving from any existing international agreement, except where the exercise of those rights and obligations would cause a serious damage or threat to biological diversity.
Contracting Parties shall implement this Convention with respect to the marine environment consistently with the rights and obligations of States under the law of the sea.
How do Contracting Parties settle disputes?
In the event of a dispute between Contracting Parties concerning the interpretation or application of the Convention, the parties concerned shall seek solution by negotiation.
Is the Philippines a Contracting Party to this Convention?
Which region has the largest biodiversity loss?
What is Urban Biodiversity?
This refers to the variety and variability among living organisms found in a city or urban areas and the ecological systems in which they occur.
What is the effect of Climate Change on Biodiversity?
As mentioned in the Foundation for the Philippines Environment (FPE) article on climate change, a large-scale loss of life in a biodiversity-rich country such as the Philippines is likely to happen if the climate change phenomenon is not provided adequate attention.
So why is biodiversity so important?
Biodiversity loss has become an increasingly bigger problem as roughly 27,000 species go extinct every year. This can be attributed to both land use and climate change.
