Round and Round
Growing Populations
What is Human's Role in the Ecosystem? In this category you will both tell me the theory and what our response to that theory is.
Mystery Box
100

What is the breaking down of phosphates into phosphorus?

Mineralization

100

What is the maximum number in a population that an area can sustain?

Carrying capacity

100

List three kinds of greenhouse gases.

Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Methane

Water vapor

100

What type of growth accounts for limiting factors?

Logistic growth

200

What is the process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can absorb and use?

Nitrogen fixation

200

After a catastrophic event, what are the first species to return to an area?

Pioneer species

Daily Double!!!!

What is the theory and response to greenhouse gases.

Theory: Humans are producing too much greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming

Response: Humans release greenhouse gases, but natural processes are responsible for most of the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere

200

What are gases that trap heat within the atmosphere?

Greenhouse gases

300

Which bacteria convert ammonia to nitrate (which is more usable to plants)?

Nitrifying bacteria

300

What is Eutrophication?

Excess nutrients in a lake.  This means more algae that die and increases the population of decomposers.  With more decomposers, there is not enough oxygen for the fish, so they die.

Daily Double!!!!

What is the theory and response to extinction rates?

Theory: Human population growth  is to blame for mass extinctions.

Response: Evolutions claim the fossil record shows a ton of extinctions.  Christians say that the fossil record shows a ton of new species.

300

Those who believe in a Biblical worldview believe what about the fossil record?

They believe it shows a record of new species.

400

List three places that precipitation goes to in the water cycle.

Plant roots

Evaporating back to the atmosphere

Runoffs to the water table

400

Explain the difference between primary and secondary succession.

Primary succession - succession that begins with a barren landscape

Secondary succession - succession in a disturbed landscape that already has soil

400

What is the theory and response to climate change?

Theory: Humans are to blame for climate change

Response: The earth's climate is changing.  But, it tends to oscillate.  Some theories have found that differences in the sun's activity may cause differences in global temp.

400

What are some functions of phosphorus?

Promotes growth in animals and plants, forms DNA and RNA, and is needed for structure and energy transport in cells

500

Explain how the nitrogen cycle works.

Nitrogen gets to the soil via food and excrement.  Nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the soil fix atmospheric nitrogen as ammonia.  Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to nitrate.  Plants take in nitrate through the roots to be used for protein production.  Denitrification is done by bacteria to get nitrogen back into the atmosphere.
500

Draw graphs showing logistic growth and exponential growth.

500

What is the theory and response to our ecological footprint?

Theory: We are using way too much of earth's resources to sustain itself.

Response.  Calculations on ecological footprints often cannot accurately model every factor involved.  We have developed technology to be able to use land more efficiently.  But, calculations of ecological footprint can show where we are using resources

500

List five ways that carbon dioxide can enter the atmosphere.

Decay of dead organisms

Decomposition of plant matter

Animal waste

Volcanic eruptions

Burning of fossil fuels
