Matter & Energy in Ecosystems
100

The sphere of Earth that includes all the layers of gas surrounding the planet.

What is ATMOSPHERE?
100

The process by which organisms change over time.

What is EVOLUTION?

100

The body system which circulates blood, transporting oxygen and nutrients to your whole body.

What is CIRCULATORY SYSTEM?

100

The double-stranded "blue-print" molecule that provides the genetic instructions for all living things; passed down from parent to offspring

What is DNA?

100
Organisms that produce their own food are called ___________________ or __________________.

What is AUTOTROPHS or PRODUCERS?

200

The sphere of Earth that includes all the water on Earth's surface, underground, or frozen.

What is HYDROSPHERE?

200

A trait or behavior that is well suited to a particular environment.

What is ADAPTATION?
200

The heart, blood, arteries, and veins are part of this body system.

What is CIRCULATORY SYSTEM?

200

DNA to mRNA is called _______________, while mRNA to proteins (amino acid sequence) is called __________________________.

What is TRANSCRIPTION and TRANSLATION?

200
Organisms that consume plants as their food source are called _________________.

What is HERBIVORES?

300

ID the 2 spheres: Living organisms breathe out carbon dioxide into the air.

What is BIOSPHERE and ATMOSPHERE?

300

The process by which organisms better adapted to their environments survive and pass on their traits/behaviors through reproduction, while those that do not naturally have the adaption die off, failing to pass on their traits.

What is NATURAL SELECTION?

300

The body system that coordinates the body's actions and transmits signals to and from different parts of the body.

What is the NERVOUS SYSTEM?

300

This process gives rise to genetically identical daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cells.

What is MITOSIS?

300

The source of all energy in a food chain is _____________________________.

What is THE SUN?

400

ID the 2 spheres: Wind carries broken down rock particles across far distances, a process known as erosion.

What is GEOSPHERE and ATMOSPHERE?

400

_____________________ are sometimes called the "raw materials" for natural selection to happen, because without them, genetic variation would not exists, so what kills one organism in a population kills ALL the organisms.

What are MUTATIONS?

400

ID the two interacting body systems: A human being breathes in oxygen from the atmosphere which diffuses into the bloodstream through tiny air sacks in the lungs. The blood then transports oxygen all around the body.

What is RESPIRATORY and CIRCULATORY SYSTEM?

400

AKA gamete formation, this process creates 4 daughter cells, each with half the chromosome count of the parent cells.

What is MEIOSIS?

400

Autotrophs produce glucose by taking in _________, ___________, and __________.

What is SUNLIGHT, WATER, & CO2?

500
ID the 2 spheres AND explain your answer:

In years with low precipitation, producers in ecosystems have lower rates of photosynthetic output, thereby affecting the entire food chain above them.

What is HYDROSPHERE and BIOSPHERE? (I will also accept ATMOSPHERE if you said less O2 is released into atmosphere).

Certain species of wolves have evolved to hunt in packs instead of solo. Elijah says that this is because, over time, wolves learned that if they hunted in packs, they would better survive predators. What is wrong with Elijah's statement?

Elijah is describing a learned behavior, which is different from a behavior evolved through natural selection

The wolves hunt in packs because their parents survived long enough to pass down that behavior to the next generation. The wolves that did not hunt in packs died, so they couldn't pass on the solo-hunting behavior. It was not an intentional choice by the wolves.

500

ID the 2 body systems:

In the antennae of moths, special receptor pick up scent molecules from mulberry plant leaves. The moths are then able to find and eat the leaves and break down the nutrient molecules into a usable form of energy.

What is NERVOUS SYSTEM & DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

500

Transcribe the following DNA segment into mRNA:

AAT  GCC  CAT  TCG  TTA

What is

UUA  CGG  GUA  AGC  AAU ?

If there was not enough sunlight available to producers, the rate of photosynthesis might decrease. What would happen to the carrying capacity of herbivores? Explain why.

Carrying capacity of organisms would decrease because there will be less food available, so organisms will have to compete for limited resources (meaning not all of them will survive and population size might decrease).
