What are systems made of?
Systems are made up of organs, which are made out of tissues
What is a wet mount?
A type of sample preparation to be observed underneath a CLM
What are unicellular and multicellular organisms and what are some examples of each?
A unicellular organism is an organism that is only comprised of one cell (amoeba). A multicellular organism is an organism that is comprised of two or more cells (humans).
What is a Microscope?
A magnifying instrument which magnifies objects by bending light through a lens
What does permeable/impermeable mean?
That all things (of its size) can pass through the membrane and impermeable means that nothing can pass through it (like a brick wall)
What do living organism need to survive?
Energy, Gas exchange, Shelter, Food/Water
How do you prepare a wet mount?
You place the subject in between two pieces of glass with a droplet of water on the subject
What is an organelle?
An organelle is simply just a part of the cell
What is a cell?
The smallest unit that it possible to perform life functions
What is Diffusion?
The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration
What do living organisms do?
Grow, produce wastes, reproduce, interact with and adapt to their environment
What is a CLM?
CLM stands for Compound Light Microscope
What does it mean to magnify something?
What is Tissue?
A collection of cells with the same function (skin, muscles, etc.)
What are stimuli? (stimulus)
A change in an environment that triggers an interaction (response to stimuli)
What are 2 things that are part of the cell theory?
1. All living things are made up of 1 or more cells
2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in every organism
What is Cellulose?
A tough, carbohydrate material that makes up cell walls in many plants and fungi
What is Osmosis?
The diffusion of particles though a semi/selectively permeable membrane
What are the parts of the CLM?
-Eyepiece (ocular lens) -Diaphragm -Stage -Arm
What are Organs/Systems?
Organs are a group of many different tissues that work together to perform a collective function
Systems are a collection of parts/organs so that a change in one part causes a change in another part
