Describe the mixed/deciduous forest
What is different about the Gobi Desert in Asia, compared to other deserts?
It is cold!
To make a hole or tunnel to dwell underground
What is the definition of harsh?
Difficult or unpleasant
Describe a cactus:
Tell me the:
category (vegetation or animal)
characteristics (what it looks like)
function (what does it do)
plant
green, tall, with spikes that protect it from being eaten
It is found in the desert, it can survive in dry climates
How does a cactus survive with very little water?
The roots of a cactus are very shallow and widespread so that it can absorb any water.
Why do you think the bottom layer of the rainforest contains leaf litter?
The leaves from the tall trees fall to the ground.
What does adapt mean?
To change your behavior or actions to make living easier
Compare the desert biome to the rainforest biome.
You need to state 1 difference between:
- the climate
- the plants
- the animals
The desert is dry, often very hot and then cold at night. The rainforest is typically moist, and warm all year round.
The desert has cacti, succulents, and shrubs that can store water in their roots and stems. The rainforest has over 15,000 plant species!
The rainforest has the greatest amount of animals and plants living there than any other biome. The desert contains animals such as the kangaroo rats, and poisonous animals such as the scorpion and black widow spider.
Why do you think a Kangaroo Rat had adapted to not pant or sweat when they are hot?
So that they don't lose any water!
Succulents can survive in the desert because of their adaptations. Describe what you think the roots might look like.
Shallow and widespread
What is the name of OUR biome?
mixed and deciduous forest or temperate forest
Describe the 3 layers of the rainforest.
Top layer is a canopy, it reaches the highest to receive a lot of sunlight.
Middle layer contains vines, smaller trees, ferns and palms. They do not require as much sun.
Bottom layer contains wet leaves and leaf litter.
Arid climates, such as the Sahara Desert have very little plants. Plants that survive there have adapted to need very little water. What do you think arid means?
Arid - dry, with very little rain
The succulent is a drought-resistant plant that is found in the desert. Because the desert receives little water, it has adapted to store water in its stems. What do you think drought-resistant means?
Drought-resistant: Ability to live during very dry period of time
What does nocturnal mean?
Active at night
Describe the desert biome.
Think about:
- think about it's climate (how much rainfall, temperature)
It is a harsh, dry environment; it receives very little rain. It can be very hot during the day, and very cold at night.
Think: what layer of the rainforest do they live in?
People keep ferns and palms as house plants because they don't require much sunlight, so it is easy to take care of!
We live in the mixed/deciduous forest biome. The deciduous forest contains oak and maple trees. The mixed and deciduous forest experiences all four season. This biome receives moderate rainfall.
What do you think moderate means?
an average amount, not extreme
What is a biome?
An area of land with it's own climate, animals, and plants
