Name as many biomes as you can (up to 500 points, 100 for each correct biome written)

Polar ice, Tundra, Coniferous forest, Tropical rain forest, Temperate deciduous forest, Temperate grassland, savanna, Desert, Chaparral, Mountains (listed on pg 318).

100
Forest biomes typically are found in what type of area?

areas that have mild temperatures and plenty of rain

100

The temperature of the ocean water increases, as the depth of the water _______________________ (increases/decreases/stays the same)

Decreases

O your notes: "The temperature of ocean water decreases as the depth of the water increases." It's the opposite of that.

100

What important abiotic factors characterizes freshwater ecosystems?

how quickly water moves

100

True of False? The Neritic zone is the area of the ocean that meets the land and so it is exposed to air for part of the day.

False! This is true for the Intertidal zone
200

Look at the map on page 318. The US is made up of which biomes?

Temperate deciduous forest, Temperate grassland, Desert, a bit of chaparral, Mountains, and coniferous forest.

200

What is another name for coniferous tress? What happens to these trees during winter?

Evergreen trees. The leaves stay on/do not fall off, they are adapted to conserve water in cold weather.

200

What are Planktons?

The mass of mostly microscopic organisms that float or drift freely in freshwater and Marine environments.
200

What ecosystems are swamps considered?

Swamps are considered wetland ecosystems.

200

True of False? Many animals in the Sargasso Sea camouflage with the algae to hide from predators.

True!

300
What 3 characteristics are important in defining a biome?
It's a large region characterized by (1) a specific type of climate, (2) types of plants, (3) types of animal communities.
300

Which type of forest has little light that reaches the ground because trees form a continuous green roof that can extend 60m above the forest floor?

Tropical Rain Forests

300

What three abiotic factors are Marine Ecosystems shaped by?

(1) water temperature, (2) water depth, (3) the amount of sunlight that passes into the water.

300

Describe the plants in the marshes.

They vary depending on the depth of water and location. For example: grasses, reeds, bulrushes, and wild rice,

300

True or False? The word deciduous come from the a Greek work and it means "to fall off," which is why deciduous trees fall off in cold seasons.

False! It comes from a Latin word that means "to fall off."

400

What are abiotic factors?

the nonliving parts of an environment, such as climate.

400

Which forest has ferns, mosses, and tall trees has the leafy tops of the trees above the forest floor?

Temperate Deciduous Forest

400

What are the 4 major ocean zones?

(1) Intertidal zone, (2) Neritic zone, (3) Oceanic zone, (4) Benthic zone.

400
What is the difference between the open-water zone vs. deep-water zone?
Open-water zone: The zone of a pond or lake that extends from the littoral zone and that is only as deep as light can reach.

Deep-water zone: The zone of a lake or ponds below the open-water zone, where no light reaches.

400

True of False? Grasslands are found on every continent but Antartica.

True!

500

What are biotic factors?

the living parts of an environment, including plants and animals.

500

What is one difference between Polar Tundra and Alpine Tundra?

Polar Tundra: later of soil beneath the surface stays frozen all the time, during the short cool summers, only the surface soil thaws, shallow rooted plants live there.

Alpine Tundra: found above the tree time/top of tall mountains, plenty of sunlight and precipitation

500

What are several ways that animals in the Benthic zone get food?

They eat materials that sink from above or get energy from chemicals that escape from thermal vents on the ocean floor.

500

How can ponds become a forest?

After pond and lakes disappear, the pond or lake can be filled with sediment. Plants grow in the new soil and eventually grow closer and closer to the center of the pond or lake. The area could become a wetland like a marsh or a swamp and then a wetland can become a forest.

500

True of False? Lakes or ponds can disappear.

If true, explain how it can disappear. It false, correct the sentence.

True, lakes and ponds can disappear because bacteria decomposing dead leaves/decaying plants & animals at the bottom of the pond use up the oxygen from the water. The loss of oxygen affects the kinds of animals that can survive in the pond or lake. Over time the pond or lake is filled with sediment.
