100

preserved remains of living things

What is a fossil

100

a natural process that slowly breaks apart or changes rock

What is weathering?

Kenji finds some interesting black rocks next to a hill. The hill is very close to where Kenji lives. Kenji shows the rocks to a scientist, who tells him that the rocks are basalt. Basalt is a type of rock that is formed after lava erupts from volcanoes, but there currently aren’t any volcanoes where Kenji lives. Do you think that there used to be a volcano where Kenji lives? Why or why not? Support your answer with evidence

What is Yes, I think there used to be a volcano where Kenji lives. Kenji found several basalt rocks and that type of rock is formed by volcanoes, so there must have been a volcano in this location at some point. The picture also shows that there is a large hill covered in grass where Kenji lives. It’s possible this hill was once a volcano a very long time ago

200

a mountain or hill with an opening. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening

What is a volcano

200

rocks are made when erosion, or the breaking down of the land around you, takes place. It is broken down by wind, water or ice

What is sedimentary rock?

200

Aiden and Jayla recently learned that weathering (root wedging and ice wedging) breaks down rocks. They think that root wedging and ice wedging have caused the cracks in the sidewalks where they live. Why do sidewalks in New Jersey have so many more cracks than the sidewalks in Florida?

What is because root wedging caused the sidewalk cracks in Florida. Both root and ice wedging caused the sidewalk cracks in NJ.

300

hot, liquefied rock that flows from a volcano or other opening in the surface of Earth.

what is lava

300

a large amount of earth, rock, and other material that moves down a steep slope. Landslides happen when a layer of earth or rocks separates from the layer below it.

What is a landslide?

300

monster mountain?

What is the rocks he rocks at the bottom of the mountain have smoother edges compared to the rocks at the top of the mountain. There are more small rocks at the bottom of the mountain compared to the rocks at the top of the mountain.

400

hot liquefied, rock located deep below the Earth's surface

What is magma

400

forms when melted rock cools and then hardens

What is igneous rock?

400

The map above shows the locations of active volcanoes and recent earthquakes. Use the information from this map to answer the question: Isabella lives in Peru. The arrow on the map shows where Peru is located. Do you think a volcano could pop up where Isabella lives?

What is yea, I think a volcano could pop up where Isabella lives. The pattern of volcanoes shows that it’s possible for a volcano to pop up in this location.

500

the process when materials on a land surface are broken down and carried by the wind, water, or ice.

What is erosion?

500

rock changed from another rock that was under high temperature and pressure.

What is metamorphic rock?

500

True or False

Volcanoes form a pattern around the Pacific Ocean. The pattern is in the shape of a ring or horseshoe.

What is true?
