What is a motor skill?

A voluntary, goal-directed activity that we learn through practice and experience. A special form of skill that require movement of the body or limbs to achieve the goal

100

Name the three stages of learning, in order.

Cognitive

Associative

Autonomous

100

What are constraints?

Boundaries/factors that shape/influence the way someone can learn a task/skill.

100

Identify two cultural factors and two social factors

SOCIAL:

Family structure

Time

Resources/accessibility

Role models

CULTURAL:

Education

Politics

Values

Religion

100

Who is on top of the AFL ladder currently?

Collingwood

200

What is a gross motor skill? Provide an example

A skill that involves the recruitment of large muscle groups.

Eg: running

200

Progressing from one stage to another and learning involves what. (2 key factors)

Practice

Time

200

Identify the three types of constraints

Individual

Task

Environment

200

Define either barrier or enabler

BARRIER: Factors that inhibit, or negatively influence people to participate in physical activity

ENABLER: Factors that positively influence people to participate in physical activity

200

The Earth is how many planets away from the sun?

The third.

300

Define 'Serial Motor Skill' and provide an example.

A combination of discrete skills is classified as a serial motor skill.

EG: Triple jump

300

List 3 descriptors associated with the cognitive stage

•Characterised by thinking and trying to understand the skill

•Movements are jerky, halting and poorly timed

•Large number of gross errors. The learner knows something is wrong, but doesn’t know how to correct it

•This stage is often quite short and with regular practice and thought, the learner will make rapid and large gains in proficiency

300

Provide examples of what may be an individual constraint.

Body size

Fitness level

Mental skills

Decision making skills

Technical skills

300

How can social support be an enabler to PA.

Surrounding yourself with people who participate in PA encourages you to do the same.

Miss Chambers favourite show out of the following is:

A. Friends

B. Brooklyn 99

C. One Tree Hill

B. Brooklyn 99

400

Which environment, closed or open, is easier to learn a skill in and why?

Closed - it is more predictable and the athlete has greater control.

400

List 3 descriptors associated with the associative stage

•This stage is quite long and in fact, the learner might never move beyond the associative stage.

•Performance is more consistent and less gross errors are made.

•Movements become coordinated and refined

•The individual learns to environmental cues for timing and anticipation develops resulting in a smoother, unrushed movement

400

Provide examples of what may be an environmental constraint.

Weather conditions

Locations

Noise levels

Family support

Peer groups

Culture of a sport/club

400

How is time viewed as a barrier to PA. Provide examples.

The person may be too busy to exercise due to sleep, work, and social commitments.

500

What is meant by the skill continuum?

Learning skills may not just be one factor or another, such as just gross or just fine. Skills can have combinations, therefore, they are on a continuum.

500

List 3 descriptors associated with the autonomous stage

•The skill is habitual or automatic

•Improvements come slowly, but there is a good consistency in performance

•Most of the skill is performed without thinking – more attention to game strategies and external cues

500

Identify how a task constraint may be applied based on an athletes body size (individual constraint).

An athlete starting football at a young age may be small in size, therefore cannot use a full size football. The task can be changed by swapping the equipment to a small ball.

500

How can level of education be both an enabler and barrier to PA. Use two different examples to justify why.

E - higher levels of education may mean the person has completed further study and gone to university and is now in a well-paying job to afford the costs associated with PA.

B - the person may not understand the benefits of PA, therefore, they don't participate.
