Martin Harris took a copy of a portion of the gold plates to him to authenticate the writing on the plates as ancient characters. He initially certified the writing on the plates was consistent with ancient Egyptian, but then refused to stand by that assessment after Martin Harris told him that an angel helped Joseph find the plates.
