300

What is the perichondrium?

A layer of cartilage around the original cartilage model.

300

List the 6 steps of Ossification in order

1) Cartilage model forms, 2) Perichondrium and periosteum form, 3) primary ossification center, 4) medullary cavity, 5) secondary ossification centers, and 6) ossification is complete.

400

What is the process of bone remodeling?

Hematoma Forms, Soft Callus, Soft callus ossifies into a bone callus, bone remodeling

400

Periosteum and Epiphyseal Plate

500

What is Hematopoiesis, and under what function does it fall?

To make blood; Blood Cell Formation

500

provide an example of all 5 bone types

Carpals/tarsals: short. Femur, phalanges, meta-tarsals/carpals, humerus, radius/ulna, tibia/fibula: Long. Vertebrae: irregular. Patella: sesamoid. Ribs, sternum, cranium: Flat.

500

explain how an ossification center is formed

The surrounding Perichondrium ossifies into bone, the new periosteum cuts off nutrients to the cartilage inside, turning it into bone. Blood vessels enter into the ossification center so that the building of the bone may continue growing from the inside-out.

500

What is the difference between a closed and open reduction?

A closed reduction is when a doctor uses their hands to set the ends of the bones back into alignment. An open reduction is when surgery is necessary to secure the ends of the bone together with screws or plates.
