Counts are the total number of events that occur in a defined period of time. The total number of cases of Salmonellosis reported in Houston during 2000 would be an example of a count

BSL 1/2/3/4

BSL (Biosafety Level Requirements)- The application of safe practices, safety equipment and special laboratories. Each level is designed for different projects. 

BSL 1- Used to study infectious agents not known to cause death consistently in health humans. Standard microbiological practices and work can be performed on open lab bench. Regular PPE and sink for handwashing. 

BSL 2- Used to study moderate-risk infectious agents that have moderate harm is inhaled, swallowed or come in contact with skin. Laboratory access is restricted, PPE is worn, when splashes may occur they use a BSC, and an autoclave is available. 

BSL3-USed to study infectious agents that can be transmitted through the air and can cause deadly infections, All research is performed in a BSC. Lab workers are under medical surveillance, lab access is restricted, all PPE and separators will be worn.  

BSL 4 _ Used to study infectious agents that are high risk of aerosol transmitted infections that are deadly with no vaccines or cures. All work is done in a cabinet or while wearing a full suit, Must change close before going in and out of lab.

Endemic refers to the constant presence and/or usual prevalence of a disease or infectious agent in a population within a geographic area.

In the definition of epidemiology, “determinants” generally includes the causes (including agents), risk factors (including exposure to sources), and modes of transmission, but does not include the resulting public health action.

Epi curve

An epidemic curve, or “epi curve,” is a visual display of the onset of illness among cases associated with an outbreak. The epi curve is represented by a graph with two axes that intersect at right angles. The horizontal x-axis is the date or time of illness onset among cases.

    1. Desiccation

      1. the removal of moisture from something.

    2. Pasteurization

      1. Pasteurization or pasteurisation is a process in which packaged and non-packaged foods (such as milk and fruit juice) are treated with mild heat, usually to less than 100 °C (212 °F), to eliminate pathogens and extend shelf life.

    3. uv light

      1. Unlike chemical approaches to water disinfection, UV provides rapid, effective inactivation of microorganisms through a physical process. When bacteria, viruses and protozoa are exposed to the germicidal wavelengths of UV light, they are rendered incapable of reproducing and infecting.

    4. pressurized steam

      1. Utilized in autoclaves create an uninhabitable environment for all bacteria using extreme pressure and extreme heat.

    5. f value.

      1. The F value is a value on the F distribution. Various statistical tests generate an F value. The value can be used to determine whether the test is statistically significant. 

    6. Disinfect

      1. clean (something), especially with a chemical, in order to destroy bacteria

    7. Sanitize - make clean and hygienic; disinfect.

Reservoir

The reservoir of an infectious agent is the habitat in which the agent normally lives, grows, and multiplies. Reservoirs include humans, animals, and the environment. The reservoir may or may not be the source from which an agent is transferred to a host.

Incidence

Incidence in epidemiology is a measure of the probability of occurrence of a given medical condition in a population within a specified period of time. Although sometimes loosely expressed simply as the number of new cases during some time period, it is better expressed as a proportion or a rate with a denominator.

Morbitity

Morbidity is another term for illness. A person can have several comorbidities simultaneously. So, morbidities can range from Alzheimer's disease to cancer to traumatic brain injury. Morbidities are NOT deaths. Prevalence is a measure often used to determine the level of morbidity in a population.

In epidemiology, a disease vector is any agent which carries and transmits an infectious pathogen into another living organism; agents regarded as vectors are organisms, such as intermediate parasites or microbes.

Coliform bacteria are organisms that are present in the environment and in the feces of all warm-blooded animals and humans. Coliform bacteria will not likely cause illness. However, their presence in drinking water indicates that disease-causing organisms (pathogens) could be in the water system.

An Executive Summary. Emerging diseases are those whose incidence in humans has increased in the past two decades, and re-emergence is the reappearance of a known disease after a significant decline in incidence.

chain of infection

The cycle starters with an agent living in its respective reservoir in its natural environment like. This Is followed by the mode of escape in which the agent leaves the reservoir and finds a potential host. This step involves the mode of transmission for example, direct, indirect, or droplet. Sequentially, the mode of entry follows, this entails how the agent will enter the new host for example, inhalation, ingestion, or absorption. After this cycle has been completed the new host will get infected in the cycle restarts as the new host infects others.
