True or False: giving an infant love can impact their brain growth.

TRUE! Giving your baby love in the beginning stages can help their brain grow, it has been shown that a child who was not shown love and affection has a brain that is 20-30% smaller than a child who is loved, cuddled, and nourished.

How many lobes are in the cerebral cortex?

4

the brain is composed of the Frontal lobe, Temporal lobe, Parietal lobe, and Occipital lobe.

100

what is a critical window

a critical window is a period of time where development is crucial for a child to develop life skills.

100

Define bonding and attachment.

Bonding; is when a parent loves and their feelings toward the baby, so how the parent interacts with the child when first born

Attachment: ongoing development of the child with the parent, so the child needs the parent, and attachment is the child forming a relationship wit the parent. -ongoing relationship

What does ACES stand for?

Adverse Childhood Experiances

200

True or False: The human brain is fully developed at birth.

False! The brain grows from the bottom up; your prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed until your mid-20s.

200

what is the first part of your brain to develop?

Your brain develops bottom up, so your spinal cord develops first which then develops your brain stem.

200

what are the critical windows?

emotional development

math and logic

language

music development

vision

Vocab and speech

What happens with a good, solid bond between a child and their caregiver?

When children have a good bond they feel like they are in control in their world and that the world is a safe and predictable place.

200
What is hyperarousal?

Repeated exposure to traumatic or stressful situations leads to a sensitized response. The child can go from mildly anxious to feeling threatened and being terrorized because their brain doesn't know the difference. Boys experience this more often than girls do.

300

Why does our society need to learn about brain development?

It is important for the community because if something is seen, people know what they are looking for and how to intervene if a problem occurs. it's important for people to have basic knowledge because most people will encounter a baby at some point in their lives and knowing how they are developed and kinda why they act the way they do can help you in your interaction and be more understanding.

300

what part of your brain helps you learn?

your frontal lobe has all your planning, higher-level thinking, problem-solving and just all of the learning is in this lobe.

300

what are the time frames for each window

Vision-6 months

speech - 3 years

language - 6 months

emotion- 2 years

 math and logic- 4 years

music - 10 years

300

what are the 3 insecure attachments?

Avoidant Attachment (the parent or guardian is emotionally unavailable)

Resistant or Ambivalent Attachment ( the caregiver is consistently unavailable or responsive)

Disorganized/disoriented Attachment (caregivers are physically abusive or frightening in their communication)

300

How can trauma, stress, and neglect affect you later on?

The brain uses something called Use-Dependent learning that helps the brain develop, where the first things developed are the things used most often, so if they have a delay in development, some things may not form. If a 3-year-old is frustrated, then they tend to have a difficult time regulating their emotions, but if a teenager who never developed an organized cortex, then they would have a hard time regulated their emotions that normally other teenagers could do.

400

Why should parents learn about how a child's brain develops?

It is important for families because everyone is different and at different stages in life. if parents know how their kids develop it can change their way of looking at things it can help parents know what to expect and how they can create the best life for their babies that they can.

400
Why does it help to learn about the brain?

learning about how the brain works helps us to understand the way that kids work and why they act the way they do and to help them when they need it the most.

400

what are important facts about these windows?

Vision- 83% of learning occurs through sight ; kids see bright and large at first

Vocab and Speech- tv is not helpful for your child speech ; read to your kids and really over talk to you kids

Native language - by 6 months infants brains filter other sounds ; babies are wired to learn new language

emotional development - touch between infant and toddlers help with feeling secure; frontal lobe helps regulate emotion ; constant stressful environments cause fear and anxiety

Math and Logic

400

True or False If a child is constantly in a stressful situation, their brain is smaller?

true; scientists have seen that children who live with "bears" have smaller brains because they are constantly in stressful situations and their brains have trouble connecting positive connections.

400

How do environmental factors influence a child's development?

Being locked in a room and never being let out can play a big role on how the child's brain develops, their brain won't form the connections it needs because it is missing out on big things that they need. Kids need people to interact with, and they need to have space to be kids; otherwise, it will affect them not only in the moment but also in the years to come.
