Olivia solved the problems below and got all the answers correct.

259.4÷10=25.94

259.4÷100=2.594

259.4÷1,000=0.2594

What is happening to the decimal point in these problems. Explain why it works.

The decimal point is moving to the left for every power of ten in the divisor. Dividing by 10 moves it 1 place to the left, dividing by 100 moves it 2 places, dividing by 1,000 moves it 3 places, etc.

*For every power of 10 in the divisor, the quotient will be that many place values smaller than the dividend. The dividend is being divided by powers of 10 (in the divisor).

39x103=39,000

39x104=390,000

Describe what is happening to the zeros and explain why it happens.

You place a zero to the right of a number for every power of 10 the number is multiplied. Multiplying by 10 adds 1 zero, multiplying by 100 adds 2 zeros, etc.

There is 1 more zero each time because each power of 10 makes the answer 10 times greater than the one before.
