What does KOR mean and what items should be KOR of children?

KOR stands for Keep Out Of Reach.

Any product labeled Keep Out Of Reach of children needs to be kept in your locked teacher's cabinet.

Typically this includes cleaning supplies, hand santiziers, sharpies, body lotions, etc.

Can table cloths be used on meal/snack tables? Why or Why not?

Table cloths should not be used on the meal/snack tables. The hard surface on the regular tables is easier to clean and sanitize effectively.

100

How and when should walkie talkies be used?

Walkie talkies should be used whenever groups are seperate (some in the gym, some in the cafeteria, etc.)

Staff need to keep communication with one another so that they know how many children there are, where they are, when they're transitioning, etc.

What is the best practice for children that need to use the bathroom on a field trip?

Children need to first notify a teacher that need to go. Since children need to be within sight and sound, a teacher needs to accompany a child.

Best practice would be to go into the public restroom and ensure no one else is in there and wait for the child. When this is not possible, the staff member needs to vocally check in with the child multiple times, and respectfully request that any one not in our program wait until they come out until they go in.  This could sound like, "Hi sir, I have two boys in there using the restroom really quick, would you mind waiting one more minute until they come out?"

We are living in different times, and it's important that we keep an especially close eye on children when they are in the bathroom and know that they are ok.

How often are your toys supposed to be sanitized?

What are the correct steps for santizing toys?

Toys need to be santitzed on a weekly basis. To make this manageable, come up with a system of which toys will be santized on which days. (Math/science cart materials one day, legos/magnettiles one day, etc.)

Every location should have 3 bins labeled wash, rinse, sanitize. Start by filling your wash bin with warm soapy water, and your rinse

200

Describe how the fridge and microwave should be kept?

They should be kept presentable and clean. The insides should be wiped down on a regular basis, and the fridge, freezer, and microwave all need safety latches put on them.

200

In regards to meals, when should gloves be used? Where can you find the glove use poster?

Gloves need to be used when serving food, even if you are using a scoop to serve. Remember that hands need to be washed prior to putting gloves on.

There is a glove use poster posted inside of every teacher cabinet.

Why are transition sheets important?

They help us to keep an accurate account of how many children we have, who picked children up, when they left, etc.

The accuracy of transitions sheets are critical as they help us to bill families, help us with any liability issues with who picked up, etc.

Licensing also requires one years worth of transition sheets to be kept on site, and then an additional two years off site.

200

When should children wash their hands on a field trip?

Best practice would be to have children wash their hands upon arrival, after toileting, before eating anything, and before leaving to get back on the bus. With large numbers, we recognize this isn't always possible, so at a minimum, children need to be washing after toileting, and then upon arrvial back to your school site.

Why is it important to have children keep their things in their own buckets?

Keeping children's belongings in their own designated buckets helps to minimize the spread of things like lice.  It also helps children to keep their belongings together so that things aren't getting mixed up and lost, and makes for an easier pick up for parents so they don't have to track down their children's things.

300

How should things be hung up on cabinets? How should they not be hung up?

Anything that is being hung up on the inside or outside of cabinets needs to be hung up with a command strip.

Never hang things up with any kind of tape (as it leaves residue), and remember that push pins are never allowed per licensing in any capacity.

300

How do you know how much of each food component to serve children? Where can you find the food portions handout?

Inside of the teacher cabinet you will find a portions guide cheat sheet that will tell you how much to serve. Most of the time the serving size is 3/4 of a cup, but always refer to the cheat sheet.

What are the different school-age qualifications and what do they mean?

Site Director- Must be at least 21 years old with 60 credit hours.

Activity Leader- Must be at least 18 years old with 460 hours

Aide/Intern- Must be 16 years old (Can take 2 children to the restroom, but otherwise cannot be left alone with a group)

Can children bring personal belongings on field trips?

Children should refrain from bringing personal belongings on field trips.

During the summer months, children are provided with a drawstring bag where they can keep a water bottle and anything needed for the field trip (towel, socks, etc.)

Children with cell phones should keep them put away in backpacks or in pockets, and not use them during program time.

Whether children can bring money or not is at the discretion of the regional manager dependant on the field trip. ABC is not liable for anything that gets lost or stolen that children choose to bring.

400

Why do staff belongings need to be kept in the locked teacher's cabinet?

When licensing comes, anything that is out and avaliable to children is fair game for them to look through. Oftentimes adults can have things in their coats/bags such as medicine, hand santizier, etc. that should be kept out of reach of children.

400

When a behavior or accident occurs, what are the correct steps for dealing with it?

First assess the severity of the situation, and if you are unsure, start by contacting your regional manager.

For accidents: Apply the proper treatment, write up the accident report, and if the child hit their head be sure to contact the parent right away to let them know.

For behaviors: After redirecting the child, decide if a behavior report is necessary. Typically behavior reports are filled out when a child leaves a mark on someone, causes a safety issue that could put our license at risk (running, hiding, etc.), threating language, severe bullying, etc.

After you have filled out the report, send it to your regional manager for approval. Once they give you a thumbs up, you are good to have the parent sign it when they pick up.

True or False. If children don't want to eat the snack we are serving, they can go straight to an activity instead of coming to the snack table?

False. Even if children do not want to eat the snack we are serving, they still need to be offered the snack so we can claim them.

The correct procedure is to have children sit down at the table in front of a plate, and then if they do not want it, they can throw it away. Studies have found that when children sit in front of the plate, they are more likely to change their mind and eat something.

If the snack is prepackaged (cheese sticks, yogurt, etc.) it does not need to be thrown away and can be reused for a different child.

How do you ensure that the items children are bringing into our program on a daily basis are both acceptable and appropriate?

You should always have good supervision on children, but be especially aware when children appear suspicious. We don't want to invade children's privacy, but we also need to be aware of anything unwanted that they may have in their backpacks such as weapons, medication, substances, etc.

400

Should walkie talkies be used on field trips?

It is best practice to bring your walkie talkies on field trips. Most places we visit are fairly large, and it is in our benefit to be able to page another staff member and let them know you are taking children to the bathroom, ask them if they can see certain children, etc.

What is the difference between ZEP and Pure Green?

What are the steps to santize/disinfect?

ZEP is a santizier. We use it to clean tables before meals/snacks, to clean toys, etc.

Pure Green is a disinfectant. It should be used to clean up bodily fluids.

When disinfecting or santizing, you should use the following 3 steps:

1st- Spray soapy water and wipe the area with a paper towel

2nd - Spray regular water and wipe the area off with a new, clean paper towel

3rd- Spray your sanitizer or disinfectant depedendant on the situation.

*Note that a new paper towel is needed for EACH step, and for EACH table

Why are there certain pieces of equipment we can't use on the playground? Can the playground be used when it's snowing?

We have to follow licensing rules and regulations, so there are certain pieces of equipment that don't meet their standards. These pieces of equipment need to be marked off with cones so that children know what they are not allowed to play on.

When it is snowing, children are allowed to play if:

-The weather is over 20 degrees

-Children are dressed properly to go outside (jackets, etc.)

-There is 6 feet of clear and resiliant surfacing around the structure.

500

How far in advance can you pre plate meals/snacks for children?

Any meals or snacks should not be pre plated for more than 10 minutes.

500

What does it mean to be within sight and sound of children?

This means that you can always see and/or hear children and what they are doing or talking about.

It is imperative that we always have a pulse on children for both their protection, as well as ours.

500

Why are we using wrist bands on field trips?

Wrist bands help us to be able to quickly distinguish which children are ours. They also help us to keep children grouped and to be more organized and efficient.
