Which assessments are administered individually?
IL 0-7, School + Reading, and at BR schools we do Reflections
100
Which assessments are given individually in Class 6?
IL7 and at BR schools we do Reflections individually
100
Name 9 things on your equipment checklist apart from student assessments.
Coordinator attitudes questionnaire, focus group protocol, cover sleeves, DMFs, pupil lists (younger and older), all 4 folders, timer, sharpened pencils for students, pencil/spare pencil for assessor, clip board, interactive copies and assessor versions of assessments, biscuits, milk & water.
100
What is the logic behind the change in scheduling at BR schools with focus groups?
We balance out when we are doing individual assessments in the day with both Class 3 and Class 6 so that the students in focus groups do not have to miss out on the group assessments.
100
Why is it important to always pay attention to child ID?
One number can make the difference of whether or not a database recognizes a child. Also, if a student has transferred in from another school, it's easy to mistake the first four numbers in their child ID.
200
How do you administer each group assessment in Class 3?
You split the children in half (into two groups) for each group assessment. For Spelling, there is no time limit, but you give them sufficient time to write the word and give them each example sentence. For Written Numeracy, you give them 3 minutes to complete as many as possible. Monitor the children to make sure they are not copying.
200
What special requirements are there for administering School + Reading with Class 6?
It is administered in a group, there must be a second person monitoring, and students need a blank sheet of paper to help them go down each question without getting confused.
200
How many desks does the SOP say you should ask for when you arrive to the school?
i. One classroom with at least 7 desks if possible for group tasks (and individual tasks) for Class 3. ii. A second classroom with at least 8 desks if possible for group tasks (and individual tasks) for the Class 6.
200
Where should the focus group be taking place at a BR school with focus groups?
Trick question - no single correct answer! Ideally, in any quiet setting that is available. A small room if possible (if there is not a lot of noise around); otherwise, somewhere outside on the school grounds where there are not other kids around.
200
How should a Buddy Reading group be set up with the students?
Ideally, it is two mentors and three buddies. If there are two mentors, one is a strong read and one is a weak reader. The buddies are grouped by reading level (low, medium and high).
300
Explain the protocol for what the assessors does when giving School + Reading or Reflections with Class 3.
Sits with the student one-on-one, reads the questions out loud one at a time, lets the student interact and point to answers, but the ASSESSOR does the ticks with the pencil.
300
Name the task that is new for Class 6 this term (it was not done at baseline).
Reflections.
300
What do you do if during attendance the class says that a child on your pupil list is not in their class anymore, but in a younger or older class?
If the class notes that a child you call on the list has been promoted to Class 4 or 7 or bumped down to Class 2 or 5, collect this child from the other classroom. Make a note of this on the pupil list in the grade and comment column and ask them whether they participated in the BR program this year if they are in a BR school. If they are in a BR school, also make a note of whether or not they participated in the comment column.
300
If you are in Class 3 at a BR school without focus groups, what do you do after you have finished the individual assessments?
Assist with Class 6 individual assessments if they are still going on. Otherwise, pack up materials, clean the workspace, organize desks and go t check over data
300
Can you name 5 staff who work or have ever been involved with Buddy Reading but who are not here?
Matthew, Peggy, Lizzie, Chandana, Helen, Sarah, Geetha
400
How is Class 3 IL7 different from Class 6 IL7?
IL7 for Class 3 only has 9 questions and is a single page. IL7 for Class 6 has 15 questions and is two pages - it ends on question 8 on the first page. There are more questions for Class 6 that they were not asked at baseline like Class 3.
400
Explain the directions you give for administering Silly Sentences (English or Swahili).
Review the examples, show the students how to check in the practice boxes, explain that they need to go in order, and show them that there are 40 total sentences.
400
What do you do about transfers in/out?
In Classes 3 and 6 ASK IF THERE ARE ANY CHILDREN TRANSFERRED IN. Ask them to stand, and ask their name and the school they have come from. Add them to the bottom of the lists and then flash the Buddy Reading office. You will be called back and told if the child is in the study and if they should be assessed. If there are kids who the class say has transferred out, write "8" and the school that they went to. If you have a child listed as "8?" you need to still ask if they are there, and if they are an "8" then you need to find out where they went.
400
What must always be done before leaving schools that is not written on the daily schedule?
Check to make sure you have all your data and that the checks on School + Reading are okay (so that you can go to find a student to correct it if needed).
400
Why do we ask the Coordinator the questions we do on the second page of the Coordinator Interview form?
Because if they have been involved with other reading or teacher training programs then it affects how we analyze the results in the study.
500
Can you remember all five example sentences from the Spelling assessment?
1. The child gives her mother a hug. 2. The tortoise is slow. 3. The fruit is sweet and ripe. 4. The pupils entered through the main gate. 5. We use our voice to speak.
500
Which tasks are timed for Class 6 and how much time do you give for each?
Written Numeracy is 6 minutes, Silly Sentences English is 3 minutes and Silly Sentences Swahili is 3 minutes.
500
How do you organize data when turning it in to Morgan? (make sure to include details about DMFs and cover sleeves)
Each child's forms should be organized within their own cover sleeve. The DMF should be the first form within each cover sleeve and then assessments should be organized in the order listed on the cover sleeve. Data should be organized in order of child ID with the lowest child ID on top, unless there are any "Incompletes," in which case those go on top.
500
Explain the flow of events in Class 3 at a BR school with focus groups.
Take attendance, split class into two groups, do group assessments with Group #1 while the other two assessors do the individual assessments with Group #2. After individual assessments are complete, Group #2 comes to do the group assessments and all of Group #1 goes to do the individual assessments. Assessor 2 should go to give out the coordinator questionnaires once finished with the group assessments before going to help with the individual assessments.
500
What does the Buddy Reading office "give" to Buddy Reading schools?
Storybooks, training for Coordinators, training for Mentors, forms (reading logs, activity observation forms, attendance forms) and weekly text message support
