What is ‘Burn Out’
Liesl - Liesl, Leslie’s step sister, is a 37 year old woman, and has worked in a bridal dress shop for the past 7 years. Although she generally really enjoys her job, in her personal life she is currently navigating a divorce from her husband of 9 years. She is struggling with the expectation to have a positive and cheery demeanor at her job, while battling the emotions of her reality of a crumbling marriage. Liesl feels exhausted “putting on a mask” every day for her clients and that she is not operating in an authentic way. Liesl’s only positive stress management at this time is taking her dog, Castro, on long walks through the bustling city. Adding to the ambiguity of Liesl’s intentions, towards the end of her walk she always turns up her music, plays Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Go Your Own Way’ from the seminal 1977 record, Rumours, and walks to the career center near her workplace. She has never entered it, but often wonders what it’s like inside.
On the weekends, Liesl reads and enjoys her time off with Castro, but feels lonely and has lost interest in her pickleball club, where she doubles with one of her coworkers in hopes of defending their neighborhood title. When Mondays come around, Liesl thinks about calling-in sick, and ends up spending as much time in the backroom as she can to get away from her smiling clients.
