Most high school students would agree that they have to do far too many homework.

One of the minor but constant - and extremely understandable - problems Italian students have with English is the idea that homework is a (grammatically) 'singular' concept in English. There is simply so much of ...... that it feels inextricably plural.

'News' is a word with many connotations, be it world news, fake news, local news, gossip, etc etc; however, grammatically, it is a very odd word, because although it ends with an 's' - which usually indicates a plural in English - it is actually a so-called 'mass' or 'uncountable' noun. This means that we would say, 'The news that I'd finally passed my test .......... most welcome and a great relief'.
