Can eating sugar, including refined sugar, cause cancer? 

Eating sugar doesn’t cause cancer. This is true for all types of sugar, including refined sugar. 

But too much sugar in our diets can make it harder to keep a healthy weight. And being overweight or obese increases the risk of 13 types of cancer.

Is it OK to drink alcohol during cancer treatment?

No, but talk to your healthcare team.

Alcohol can interfere with some cancer treatments and medicines. It can make side effects like a sore mouth and throat worse. And we now know that drinking any type of alcohol increases your risk of developing some types of cancer.

This is more important than your loved one eating.

Staying hydrated. Allow your loved one to say “no” but make sure they stay do stay hydrated.  Keep track of the amount of fluid they take each day.

Name 3 things you can do if you are experiencing loss of appetite and nausea?

- Eat small, frequent meals of easily digestible foo

- Try to avoid rooms that are too warm or stuffy

- Try dry starchy foods such as crackers or dry toast

- Choose foods that are cold or room temperature.

- Avoid greasy, spicy, hot, or very sweet food

- Slowly sip cold, clear juices, ginger ale, or other carbonated beverages

- Restrict fluids with meals

- Try peppermint or ginger tea or sucking a candy flavored with peppermint, wintergreen or lemon

- Try high calorie medical nutritional supplements

- Try relaxation techniques

- Wear loose clothing

Can green tea prevent cancer? 

Green tea and matcha (powdered green tea) do not reduce the risk of cancer. 

Some people have suggested that green tea might reduce the risk of cancer. This is because it contains catechin - an antioxidant.

Can a diet cure cancer?

No, there is no scientific evidence that any specific food or diet (for example, the alkaline diet, a macrobiotic diet or the Gerson therapy diet) can cure cancer.

If a person is consuming regular meals and snacks but is losing weight, they may be experiencing cancer cachexia. Name 3 tips that may help increase appetite, improve interest in eating and assist in controlling weight loss.

                                                                     

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Exercise lightly before meals to stimulate appetite. 
  • Select enjoyable foods and foods that have a pleasant aroma
  • Aim for 6-8 small meals and snacks per day
  • Eat meals and snacks at scheduled times, even if not hungry
  • Substitute a meal with a nutritional supplement drink or a homemade smoothie made with protein powder. 
  • Take anti-nausea medication at the first sign of queasiness or nausea. 
  • Consult with a registered dietitian for nutrition counseling
  • Eat calorie-rich, nutrient-dense foods and try not to consume foods or liquids with little nutritional value
  • Restrict or avoid any foods that may cause or worsen diarrhea
  • Ask the doctor or dietitian whether pancreatic enzymes may be helpful

What are carcinogenic foods? 

Foods that could cause cancer. There aren’t many foods that cause cancer, but eating processed and red meat can increase the risk of bowel cancer.

What causes sore mouth and throat during treatment?

Sore mouth and throat can be caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Does gluten play a role in causing cancer, or its recurrence?

There is no connection between gluten and cancer, with the exception of intestinal cancer and individuals with celiac disease or true gluten intolerance. Whole grains, with or without gluten, should be part of a healthy diet.

Can any foods prevent cancer? 

No single food can prevent cancer, but eating wholegrain foods that are high in fibre does reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

Do I need to avoid soy foods if I have an estrogen-related cancer?

No.  Phytoestrogens and the female hormone estrogen in your body are not the same thing.

Soy foods are a safe, healthy option even if you have a hormonally sensitive cancer that grows in response to estrogen, such as estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer, uterine (endometrial) cancer, or ovarian cancer.
