Deoxygenated blood returns from the body via the superior/inferior vena cava into the right atrium, passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, and is pumped through the pulmonary valve to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. Oxygenated blood returns via pulmonary veins to the left atrium, passes through the mitral valve to the left ventricle, and is pumped through the aortic valve to the aorta for systemic circulation.
