Pulmonary Circuit

Carries blood to and from gas exchange surfaces of the lungs

100

Systemic Circuit

Carries blood to and from the rest of the body

200

Three Types of Blood Vessels

1. Arteries - Carry blood away from heart

2. Veins - Carry blood to heart

3. Capillaries – Extensive networks between arteries and veins

200

Four Chambers of the Heart

1. Right atrium – Collects blood from systemic circuit 2. Right ventricle – Pumps blood to pulmonary circuit 3. Left atrium – Collects blood from pulmonary circuit 4. Left ventricle – Pumps blood to systemic circuit

300
What are the walls of the heart and differentiate them

Epicardium (Outer Layer)

▪ Is the visceral pericardium that covers the heart

Myocardium (Middle Layer)

▪ Muscular wall of the heart

Endocardium (Inner Layer)

▪ Simple squamous epithelium and aerolar tissue

300

Which side of the heart is thicker and why?

The left side! More muscular (thicker) and more powerful than right side because left ventricle pumps blood at higher pressures than the rest of the heart chambers, as it faces a much higher workload and mechanical afterload. So distance wise it covers more area, it needs to be able to send blood to your toes for ex.

Cardiac Veins include

Great cardiac vein (travels with left interventricular and circumflex arteries)

Middle cardiac vein (travels with posterior interventricular artery – not identified here)

Small cardiac vein (travels with the right cardiac artery)

All drain into the coronary sinus which empties into the right atrium

Tell me about the Coronary Arteries

Coronary Arteries

- Left and right coronary arteries originate at base of aorta

- They are the FIRST vessels that arise from the Aorta

RCA

-Supplies blood to the right atrium and portions of both ventricle

LCA

-Supplies blood to the left ventricle, left atrium and interventricular septum

-Two Main Branches of Left Coronary Artery:

1. Circumflex artery

2. Anterior interventricular artery (AKA Left Anterior Descending or LAD)

500

Draw the heart and blood vessels (in as much detail as you can)

Look at notes/ heart labelling sheet andrew gave you in labs last week

500

Draw a diagram on how blood circulation occurs in the body (hint: start and end with inferior and superior vena cava)
