What is a payday loan and why is it bad for people living in poverty?

A payday loan is an immediate unsecured loan that is expected back, with a certain amount of interest, on the borrower's "pay day." 

They can be very bad for people in need because of the amount of interest on the loan and can easily cause people to go into more debt or to lose other valuable possessions (for example, their house or vehicle could be taken away if they are unable to pay back the loan.)
