The required equipment for this modality includes a generator, an applicator and a conductor.
What is Ultrasound?
The desired purpose of this treatment method is typically for upper extremity injuries, cervical or thoracic spine dysfunction, and to promote circulatory benefit to the patient.
What is the Upper Body Ergometer (or UBE)?
This post-operative device is set to 0 degrees of extension and 70 degrees of flexion for the targeted joint of the lower extremity immediately following this elective procedure.
What is a Continuous Passive Motion Machine (or CPM)?
This device should never be pointed directly at the operator or patient, and should not be used inside the Forma-splint pan.
What is a heat gun?
This modality can be used in conjunction with other PAMS, but at least one layer of clean linen/toweling is needed as a protective barrier for the patient’s skin.
What is a cold pack?
For this modality, it is important that the electrode pads are placed at least 6 inches apart, and the non-sterile lead wires are connected to said electrodes based on their positive and negative charges.
What is Iontophoresis?
This post-operative support may be used with or without an abductor pillow to safely secure the newly repaired joint after a rotator cuff repair, acromioplasty, biceps tenodesis, and/or total joint replacement.
What is a shoulder sling?
Any drop of systolic pressure greater than 20 points, or diastolic greater than 10 points from supine to standing at any point during the testing signifies this phenomenon, which can be observed by any treating therapist across settings.
What is orthostatic hypotension?
This implantable cardiac device is a contraindication for treatment involving electrical stimulation, unless otherwise cleared by referring physician.
What is a pacemaker?
This modality can be used in conjunction with other PAMS, but at least four layers of clean linen/toweling is needed as a protective barrier for the patient’s skin.
What is a moist hot pack?
While the settings vary across clinics/machines, at Cary Rehab there are four options to provide this modality, and they include: Pre-mod, IFC, Hi-Volt, and Russian.
What is Electrical Stimulation (or E-stim)?
No matter the setting, a patient reporting sudden onset of dizziness, weakness, light-headedness, dyspnea, fatigue, and/or chest pain, indicates the necessary assessment of what by the treating therapist.
What are vital signs?
This unit of measure aligns with a frequency of 1.0 for tissue penetration of 2.3-5cm as well as 3.3 for tissue penetration of 0.8-1.6 cm.
What is megahertz (mHz)?
Active infections, altered or lack of sensation, and this condition documented in a patient's PMH are contraindications for nearly all PAMS without further discussion with referring provider.
What is cancer?
Draining this device prior to refilling with fresh water and ice is essential for maximal use in managing post-operative pain and swelling.
What is a Cryocuff?
This device is ineffective without application of clinical reasoning to select one of ten head attachments to treat the targeted area.
What is a Massage Gun?
This heat-based modality is typically used for distal body parts to address ongoing inflammation, edema, spasticity, pain, and/or muscle spasm.
What is Paraffin Wax Bath?
This method of cryotherapy must be constantly mobilized to patient tolerance and may be included within manual treatment time.
What is ice massage?
Whenever applying a cryocuff, cold pack, or ice massage, these two conditions are important to be aware of, as they are unique contraindications for cryotherapy.
What is Raynaud's disease and (h/o) frostbite?
Used in conjunction with other manual therapy techniques, selection of instrument type/shape, variation of strokes, duration of treatment, and throughout skin checks before and after treatment provided are all important components of this treatment modality.
What is Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (or IASTM)?
While this modality can be provided as a manual technique as well as with a device, the overall goal is to provide a distraction force, increase the interspace between the vertebrae, widen the nerve root space, and facilitate a stretch to surrounding ligamentous and muscular structures.
What is mechanical traction?
Using negative pressure to stimulate circulation, promote connective tissue remodeling, mobilize adhesions and fascial restrictions, and stimulate fibroblast proliferation and collagen repair, this manual technique can be used statically, dynamically, or with exercise.
What is myofascial cupping?
When using this modality as a method of joint support, tension <50% facilitates motion, while >50% inhibits and/or limits motion.
What is Kinesiology Tape?
There are two types of contraindications for pneumatic compression; type one includes cardiac edema, arterial disease, spasticity, acute infections and type two includes hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, paresis/paralysis/decreased sensation, diabetes, malignant lymph, age, and RSD/CRPS.
What is absolute and relative?
When using this device as part of direct patient care, the therapist will adjust resistance and determine duration of use according to the patient’s current presentation.
What is cardiovascular conditioning equipment?
