Cafeteria
Community - These tasks must be done after you are finished eating lunch.
What is DUMP your tray carefully and CLEAN any crumbs or food you left on your table.
Community - "This is what I do with candy wrappers, old school work I don't need, and any other garbage I brought with me on the school bus!"
What is "I put any garbage I have in a trashcan, even if I have to take it with in order to find a garbage can."
Community - Good decision or Bad decision? "I just washed my hands and dried them with this paper towel. I'm going to stick this paper towel to the stall door because its funny."
What is, "Bad decision?" What if someone came and made a mess in the bathroom at your home. That would stink cause someone has to clean it up!
Community - Just like with bathrooms, we should place our trash in the MANY trashcans in the hallways and out on the blacktop! True or False!
What is "True!"
"I should check the handout box when I come into Mr. W's classroom!" Good decision or bad decision?
Good decision! Sometimes I'll place handouts (important notes or work we'll do that day) in the handout box by the sink.
Accountability - When you wait in line, how do you wait? Being crazy? Making lots of noise?
Accountability - True or False? "Its cool to draw and doodle, but I do that on paper. Not on seats or parts of the bus."
What is "True!" Sometimes the bus can take a bit and its fine to draw or doodle. Just do it on your own paper! You wouldn't want someone to start drawing pictures on the seats of your family's car, right?
Accountability - "I just went to the bathroom and there is a sink that isn't draining and the water is filling up and about to run over and make a mess. Oh well. Stuff happens." Good Decision or bad decision?
"Aliens were in front of the door to the library hallway and I didn't want to get abducted, so I went through the door on the left!" Good decision or Bad decision!
"Bad decision!" Number one, aliens aren't real. Number two, double doors to hallways, the gym, cafeteria and library can get crowded at a school (especially during passing). Always use the door on the right, so people going the other way can come through the door on the left!
When I come in to class I should take my seat, get out my "Everyday 'must haves'" and look on the screen for the Entry Task!" Good decision or bad decision!
Good decision! This helps us move in to our learning efficiently if we do all of this before the bell rings!
Values - This is how we move around the lunchroom.
What is, "We walk, not run. Their are too many people and too many tables to move fast. We save that for outside."
Values - "Is it nice, and also a CAVS value, when we are kind and say "Hello" to the bus driver?
What is "Of Course!" Its also great to say "Thank you!" when you leave. Bus drivers do a lot more than just get you from your house to the school.
Values - "It might be awesome to write my name in gothic on the bathroom door. Because then Jose and George will see it and know who it is..." Does this show good values?
What is, "No!" Don't know if you know this but it takes a super long time for a custodian to clean writing off a bathroom wall tile. I would rather have them spend time cleaning sinks and toilets so they're nice and clean the next day when needed!
Values - "When I'm dismissed to 7th lunch sixth graders are still having class. But I like to yell really loud in front of room 28 because my 6th grade friend is in there!" Good decision or bad decision!?
"Bad decision!" What if your friend is taking a complicated test! Don't interrupt them! And wouldn't it be nice to just go to lunch and not have the teacher in room 28, or any other room give you detention!? Show respect!
Does Mr. Whitney use table captains? Yes or No!
"Yes!" If I need to pass something out to everyone I might ask table captains to get up out of their chair and get whatever I'm passing out to folks at their table! This is safer and quicker than having everyone move at once. "CHAOS!"
Safety - True or False? "I walk around with my food, moving around the cafeteria while I'm eating."
What is "False!" Poor decision.. Just sit with your friends while you're eating otherwise you might trip over something and then we have a mess you have to clean up!
Safety - "I'm going to stick my hand out the window as the bus goes by my friends house." Good decision or bad decision?
What is, "Bad Decision!" Sometimes buses come close to stop signs and branches of trees. If we put our hands out, we can hurt ourselves!
Safety - I'm not going to wash my hands. "Hey Jake, let me have some of your Takis!" Is this gross?
What is, "Yes!" I like to share, but I don't want to if someone's not going to wash their hands with soap and water after the bathroom. Also, we should always flush. Enough said.
Values - "Some bad words are OK. Other bad words are really bad and not OK." True or false!
What is, "FALSE!" It's not cool to use bad words, curse, use profanity, etc. It actually says a lot about who we are (the way we talk). If you're worried about which words are cuss words, and which are not (not sure) you can ask Mr. W. But be serious about it. The point is to use good language. Movies and some adults make it seem OK, but remember, people hear you and leaves an impression.
The correct way, or not the correct way? "I just finished Mr. W's assignment from last Thursday. I'll just hand it to him!"
Not the correct way to turn in work! If you need to turn in work you've completed, put it in one of the colored boxes in the back. Look for the correct period for your class or ask me to show you! Believe it or not, it gets to me and doesn't get lost this way!
Values - True or False? "I can be on my phone in the cafeteria!"
Safety - Respecting the rules of the bus is a an "on again, off again" responsibility! True or False?
What is "FALSE!" Respecting the rules of the bus and the bus driver is a 24/7 job! Why? Because the bus and being driven to school is serious business! Their are crazy drivers on our streets and bus drivers need to stay focused and not worry about us cuttin' up!
Values - Is using the bathroom during class a privilege!
What is, "Yes!" Everyone needs to go (that's a right), and sometimes there isn't enough time during passing, especially if its occupied. So, make sure you do your part to take care of the bathroom when teachers let you go during class! Treat it as a privilege so the teacher doesn't get asked by the principle, "Hey why did you let so and so go to the rest room during class? They messed it up!"
"When I get out of 1st period, I like to go over by the library and see my friend, even though my class is in the courtyard. Once in awhile it's OK to be tardy." Good decision or bad decision!
What is, "Bad decision!" Tardies add up! 4 tardies in a month equals a referral. 3 tardies is a call home! You'll see your friend at lunch or after school! Better to be on time and show respect to our CAVS Values!
True or False?! "Mr. Whitney always lets us line up at the door before the bell rings!"
What is, "FALSE!" Lining up at the door is bad news, and not our routine. We stay in our seats until the bell rings, push in our chairs, and walk (not run) when we leave. I've seen people get pushed and fall as they're rushing out the door after lining up, waiting for the bell. Especially during 6th period (last class) or before lunch!
