What was the New Deal?

The New Deal was created by FDR in 1932 to 1940 and embraced economic security as a part of American freedom. This was a series of legislation that guaranteed American citizens a minimum standard of living through government programs.

What was the Public Works Administration?

A depression-era public works agency that constructed large-scale public works such as dams, bridges, hospitals, and schools.

Who was Eleanor Roosevelt?

Eleanor Roosevelt was FDR's wife and a humanitarian. She transformed the role of the first lady into a base for political action by actively promoting help for children and the poor. She also spoke out about public issues, wrote a newspaper column, and worked to enlarge the scope of the New Deal to civil rights, labor legislation, and work relief.

What was Court Packing?

FDR feared conservatives in the supreme court after 2 pieces of legislation from the New Deal were declared unconstitutional. So, he proposed the Court Reform/Court Packing bill to congress, in attempt to appoint 6 new justices that would agree with his New Deal policies. 

This bill failed and tarnished Roosevelt's image. But FDR was still able to appoint 7 new justices, which helped him pass more legislation.

What was the Emergency Banking Act?

Created by FDR and passed by the United States congress in March 1933 to stabilize the banking system. It authorized the U.S treasury department to inspect the country’s banks and allow only banks that were economically solvent to reopen and offered loans to banks that needed assistance.

Created in 1933 to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development to the Tennessee Valley. It also provided many jobs for poor farmers in several southern states.

Social security was created by FDR for elderly retired, widows, and disabled people. It consisted of returning the money collected by the government directly to the people in the form of pensions every 30 days.

The first three months of Roosevelt's legislation, occurring in 1933. During this time, Roosevelt seized on the sense of crisis and the momentum of his electoral victory to win the passage of laws that he believed would recover the economy.

Fireside chats were used by FDR to appeal to traditional values in support of new policies. Through which, he proclaimed his own definition of freedom as greater security for the average man and explained the political processes which he took to restore the economy in simple terms.

These chats provided hope for everyday American citizens during the Great Depression and reinforced the purpose of broadcast media.

United States presidential election of 1936, American presidential election held in 1936, in which Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt won reelection, defeating Republican Alf Landon. Roosevelt won electoral votes in all but 2 states.

What was the National recovery Administration?

Proposed by FDR. Labor law and consumer law enacted to authorize the president to regulate industry for fair prices that would stimulate economic recovery. The act also recommended minimum wages and maximum hours for workers.

What was the Dust Bowl?

Great Plains counties where millions of tons of topsoil were blown away from parched farmland in the 1930s, which was followed by massive immigration of farm families. Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Kansas. This was caused by the excessive agriculture in south and inspired new roads to built in these states.

What was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)?

A voluntary public relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the U.S for unemployed, unmarried men. It planted 200 million trees in the Great Plains to prevent future soil erosions, and built roads, parks, and flood control systems.

What was the Works Progress Administration?

The Works Progress Administration was the most ambitious program of the second new deal, which employed over 8 million job seekers to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads from 1935 to 1943.  It constructed 850 airports, sewed more than 300 million articles of clothing for the needy, and erected more than 110,000 libraries, schools, and hospitals. It also created jobs for artists, authors, and musicians.
