What four things should staff bring with them in the event that there is a tornado and we need to shelter in place?
1) classroom attendance sheet
2) emergency contact list for each child
3) first aid bag
4) emergency medications
Who should employees report threats of violence or perceived threats of safety concerns to?
Their immediate supervisor: this would be the front desk and management (director/center coordinator)
If you are outside with the children and an act of violence occurs outside of CDC and in the neighboring area what is the first thing you should do?
GET INSIDE!
Do not loiter outside of the building trying to see what is going on. This might be a time where our building will go on lock down and you don't want to find yourself unable to get back in if you need to.
True or False: if it is lightning outside you should keep the children inside, even if it's not raining.
True!
Lightning is the deadliest weather event and can strike miles from a thunderstorm and up to 30 minutes after. If it is lightning outside: stay inside!!
Where can you find the planned evacuation routes for every classroom?
located by the fire exit door in each classroom
What is the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning?
watch - indicates conditions are right for the development of a weather hazard
warning - indicates a hazard is imminent or the probability of occurrence is extremely high
In the event of immediate danger who should you call?
911!
True or False: evacuation will be the best course of action for every room in the center?
False!
Evacuate the building only if possible, if not quietly and securely hide. It will be your call as to which course of action will fit best for you regarding where you are at the time of occurrence.
If an area is flooded - what is the most important thing you should avoid?
DO NOT walk through or drive through standing water!
Flooding is very dangerous and causes many deaths each year - if you must walk through standing water, use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you before proceeding.
Once outside, where is the designated safe assembly area?
along the fence
If you don't know where to take your classroom to shelter in place due to a severe weather warning - where should you look?
On planned emergency routes located by emergency exits in classroom. (Additionally, each classrooms shelter in place location is labeled in the main hallway of the center.)
Which statement is NOT considered workplace violence?
1) an employee verbally threatens or intimidates a coworker
2) an employee makes a veiled or implied threat to a supervisor
3) a child is angry at staff and tells them "I'll meet you in the street!"
4) a client (parent) makes threatening comments/gestures to an employee or another client
3) A child threatening to "meet you in the street" would not be considered work place violence!
In the event that we need to evacuate the premises: where is our evacuation site located?
Children and Families of Iowa - Main Agency
1111 University Ave Des Moines, IA 50314
Double Points: what is CDC's unscheduled closings/inclement weather policy?
We follow what DMPS does for inclement weather!
If DMPS closes, CDC will also close. Director/Center Coordinator will reach out to staff and families confirming the closure.
If DMPS has a "late start", CDC will also have a late start. A 2 hour delay would mean the center will open at 8:30am, instead of 6:30am.
If DMPS closes early, CDC will also close early. Parents will have 2 hours, from the DMPS closing time, to pick their children up from CDC. (ex: if DMPS closes at 1:00pm, children must be picked up from the center at 3:00pm)
If CDC loses power/water: The general practice is to wait one hour without power/water and if power/water is not restored, office staff will need to call parents and ask them to pick their children up within the next hour.
Once you have made it to the safe assembly area, what is the first thing you should do?
HEAD COUNT - ensure that all children in your care are accounted for. If a child is missing notify leadership staff or emergency personnel immediately.
In the event that there is a tornado watch - where is the safest place for everyone to be?
Inside!!
If a severe weather watch is announced: continue monitoring the weather, move all persons inside the building, and review severe weather and sheltering procedures and the location of shelter areas.
True or False: in the event of an active shooter you should wait for leadership or management to give you instructions.
False!
DO NOT wait for someone in leadership/management give you instructions, try to remain calm so you can think clearly and quickly. Familiarize yourself with the emergency exits in your program, use your best judgement and act accordingly.
All employees and parents are issued a key fob to get into the building. If you don't recognize someone who is at the door should you let them into the building?
NO! DO NOT let anyone in the building that you do not recognize!
Do not open the door for any person you are not familiar with or do not know. Meet guests at the main entrance if you do not know who they are or what their business may be at the center. If office staff are in ratio, ask the person to wait in the vestibule and step into ratio for them so they can figure it out.
If you notice an unauthorized person in your work area - what should you do?
1) Ask the person if they require assistance
2) Don't take "no" for an answer
3) Follow up by ensuring the person is truly authorized to be there - check with office staff immediately
*If you are uncomfortable approaching the person, unable to approach the person, the person acts in a suspicious or strange manner when you approach them, or the person runs from the work area, immediately call 911 and then report to your manager.
Double Points: If you notice smoke and the alarm doesn't sound, what are the three things you should do? (will get points for naming any of them!)
1) leave now and tell others to leave
2) pull fire alarm (note: this does not alert the fire department so 911 will also need called)
3) let management know immediately
True or False: when sheltering due to a tornado warning the safest place to be is near the perimeter of the building near windows.
False!
The safest place to shelter is in your designated area, away from outside windows and walls. Crouch low to the floor, if wind strikes cover your neck and head, and stay away from windows until the all clear is given.
Double points: if you are unable to evacuate and need to hide what are some strategies you can use? (There are 6 strategies - points will be given if you can name any of them!)
1) Close and lock the door (add a door stopper from the inside in addition to locking the door), barricade the door
2) Lights out
3) Cellphone off or on silent
4) Arm yourself with something easily accessible that could be used to defend yourself such as a pair of scissors, keys or something else that can be turned into a sharp instrument or a heavy object for hitting
5) Remain calm and very quiet
6) Stay out of sight from windows that look into the area and close blinds
True or False: in the event of a medical emergency and the victim has a head or neck injury you should NOT move the victim, unless there is a major safety concern.
True!
The role of employees in a medical emergency is to provide care to the victim until the first responders arrive. DO NOT move the victim, especially if you suspect a head or neck injury, unless safety is a concern.
True or False: In the event that a parent shows up to the center to pick up their child and they are visibly intoxicated we should just let the parent take the child and not take any action.
False!!
While we can't prevent the parent from taking their child we can make every effort possible to not allow the child to leave with the parent. Law enforcement will be contacted and we can offer the parent assistance with finding alternative transportation if they are driving.
