How did you learn about fire safety? What does RACE and PASS stand for?

We received fire safety training upon hire. We reviewed fire safety training and were oriented to new locations in the new building. We also must renew every 3 years.

We are trained to use RACE:
R - Remove anyone in immediate danger to a safe area
A - Alert by pulling the nearest fire alarm pull box (where provided), then dial “55”
C - Contain/close all doors and windows; place patients and visitors in rooms.  Stop pedestrian traffic to affected area.
E - Evacuate/Extinguish - Evacuate area (as detailed in the departmental fire plan). Attempt to extinguish fire only if you are not putting yourself or others in danger.

Utilize the elements of the acronym PASS when using a fire extinguisher
P – Pull the pin on the extinguisher
A – Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
S – Squeeze the trigger on the extinguisher
S – Sweep at the base of the flame

We wash our hands for 15 seconds minimum before and after every patient contact, every procedure, with medication prep, and in areas like the kitchen.

Where is your disaster manual? Where are your disaster supplies stored?

The disaster manual is available on the intranet and a hard copy manual is available by PP1/PP2. Disaster bag is in the TC back closet.
In the event of a total power failure, we have radios available for communication. Be prepared to demonstrate if requested.

The closest fire extinguisher is in the fax/microwave room and fire pull station is located outside by the cafeteria.

How do you access organization and departmental Policies and Procedures?

We access P&Ps through Policy Tech our policy system on One Portal.  P&Ps are current and have been approved according to our policy approval Policy A-2 (approval body e.g. Medical Executive Committee, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, etc.).
Be prepared to discuss any new or updated policies that have significant impact to your department if applicable.

What do you in the event of a power outage? Power, Communication, and Charting. 

What is use generator power. If phones do not work then we would use analog phones or 2-way radios. For documentation we would use downtime forms.

Where can Safety Data Sheets (SDS) be found for hazardous materials or chemical spills?

Safety Data Sheets are located on line through the Incora Hazcom database which can be accessed through One Portal. In the event that the One Portal is unavailable,  there is access to SDS information through the 24/7 ChemTel hotline (800)-255-3924. Facilities does have paper copies of SDS sheets.

Be ready to show the surveyor how you access SDS sheets for hazardous materials and chemicals.

In case of a chemical spill, we follow the instructions for Hazardous Material-Waste Spill Emergencies in the Disaster / Emergency Preparedness Manual and dial 44320 or 911 on campus to report the spill and call a Code Orange.
