Balanced Chemical Equation.

WO3(s) + 3H2(g) → W(s) + 3H2O(g). This equation represents the manufacturing of lightbulbs.

100

Positive?

Improved overall productivity with a side factor of cost reduction. It also provides an increase in quality since it is by far one of the main components of manufacturing technology.

100

1879

He was hired as assistant manager and draftsman for the U.S. Electric Lighting Company. While Latimer was there he invented a modification to the process for making carbon filaments which aimed to reduce breakages during the carbonization process..

Date of Birth

Lewis Howard Latmier was born on September 4th, 1848 in Chelsea Massachusetts, United States.

100

Patents

Lewis Howard Latmier received a total of 8 patents ranging from 1874 to 1910.

Balanced Word Equation.

Tungsten Trioxide + Precipitate --> Tungsten + Water

This is the word equation for the written chemical equation above.

200

Negative?

Destruction of wildlife and a big indicator of global warming. A big factor of most pollutions in both the human population and animal population as well as water contamination.

200

1884

He was invited to work with Thomas Edison. Along with the work he did with Edison, he was also responsible for translating data into German and French, as well as gathering that information

200

Studies

Latmier taught himself mechanical drawing in the Union Navy since he had no access to formal education and eventually became a chief draftsman and a patent expert.

Reason for Reaction.

Why is it used? This is because when the electricity gets passed through the bulb (tungsten), electrons get excited and release the energy as light in usage to photons.

Latimer pursued a patent on a safety elevator which prevented the riders from falling out and into the shaft.

Background

Before Lewis was born, his mother and father escaped from slavery in Virginia and fled to Chelsea, Massachusetts on October 4, 1842. After his father had to flee and his mother had to split the family, Lewis and his brothers (1) were sent to a farm school, and his sisters (2) were sent to stay with a family friend. Lewis Howard Latimer joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 on September 16, 1864.

1918

Lewis Latimer joined the Edison Pioneers. He was the first person of color to join this group of 100 other white people.

400

Connection

Latimer received a patent on September 13th, 1881, along with his collegue Joseph V. Nichols, for a method of attaching carbon filaments to conducting wires within an electric lamp, and another patent on January 17, 1882, for a "process of manufacturing carbons" which is a method for the production of carbon filaments for lightbulbs. This reduced breakages during the production process by wrapping the filaments in a cardboard envelope.

Health Impacts?

Air pollution, heat stress, particle pollution which can then lead to cardiac diseases, increased risk of chronic respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and many other illnesses/diseases.

1924

After the Board of Patent Control dissolved Latimer went on to work with Hammer and Schwartz until he retired.

500

Obstacles

One problem he had to overcome was his skin color. It was difficult for people of color to gain acceptance in the world at this point in US history, but Latimer's talents were enough to bring him to the attention of both Alexander Bell and Thomas Edison. Another problem Latimer had to overcome was having little formal education. He had to work at a young age, around age ten, but his talents at mechanical drafting brought him to the attention of the patent law firm where he first worked as an office boy. He was promoted to draftsman, and this began him on his path in engineering.
