100

I evolved from prokaryotic cells, but I am much more complex and advanced. I contain a nucleus and a cytoskeleton.

Eukaryotic cell

100

I am a very small simple cell without membrane-bound organelles. I belong to the Monera kingdom.

Prokaryotic Cell

100

I am a thin protective layer that surrounds all cells, but I am not one solid piece: I have tiny openings that allow materials to pass in and out of the cell.

Cell membrane

100

I am the jelly-like fluid inside all cells where the chemical reactions needed to carry out the vital functions take place.

Cytoplasm

200

I am a large storage unit in the cell that stores food, water and wastes. I am larger in plant cells than in animal cells.

Vacuole

200

I am not a membranous organelle, but I can be found throughout the cytoplasm or attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum. I am responsible for building proteins in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Ribosome

200

I am a food producer but you wouldn't find me in animal cells. I am an egg-shaped organelle with a double membrane. I synthesise organic molecules from inorganic ones using the energy from the Sun.

Choloroplast

200

I am the power plant of animal and plant cells. When the cell needs energy, I obtain it through cell respiration.

Mitochondrion

300

I have evolved from ancient autotrophic bacteria.

Chloroplast

300

I have evolved from ancient heterotrophic bacteria.

Mitochondrion

300

I am the "brain" of the cell, and I control all the activities of the cell. I am located in the cytosol, but you wouldn't find me in prokaryotic cells.

Nucleus

300

I am the eukaryotic cell's protein and lipid producer as well as its transport system. I am made by a complex set of tubules and vesicles and there are two kinds of me: rough and smooth.

Endoplasmic Reticulum

400

I can be found in both prokaryotic and plant cells (and also in algae and fungi), although I have a different composition in each. I am the outermost part of the cell. I provide support and protection.

Cell wall

400

I am a mobile organelle that can be found both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic (animal) cells. I am basically made of protein fibres.

Flagella

400

I gather molecules and modify them. Then I introduce them into vesicles for secretion. I can be found in eukaryotic cells.

Golgi apparatus

400

I act like a digestive system in eukaryotic animal cells. I contain enzymes that break down molecules that they capture.

Lysosome

500

I can only be found in animal cells. I am formed by protein tubules and I am also involved in cellular division.

Centriole

500

I am the scientist who developed the endosymbiotic theory that explains the origin of the eukaryotic cells.

Lynn Margulis

500

We appear when eukaryotic cells begins to divide but we also exist in prokaryotic cells. We are made of DNA and are found usually in pairs in eukaryotic cells, whilst in prokaryotic cells we are singular and round.

Chromosomes

500

I am a microscopic network of protein filaments and microtubules. My main function is to maintain the eukaryotic cell's shape and internal organization. I also help cells move.
