100

The first person to view cells under a microscope

Who is Robert Hooke?

100
A type of transport that moves against the concentration gradient

What is active transport?

100

Explain the difference between osmosis and diffusion

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules only, diffusion is the movement of any molecule

200

List 3 organelles that both prokaryotes and euokaryotes have

1. Cytoplasm

2. DNA

3. Ribosomes

4. Cell membrane

200

The molecule needed to carry out active transport in cells

What is ATP?

200

The definition of isotonic

What is a solution that has the same amount of solutes and solvents?

300

The type of microscope you would use to observe the organelles of a cell

What is a transmission electronic microscope?

300

List 3 differences between plant and animal cells

Plant cells have chloroplasts, animals don't

Plant cells have cell walls, animals don't

Animal cells have centrioles, plants don't

Animal cells have lysosomes, plants don't

Plant cells have a large central vacuole, animals don't

300

The way in which cells take in large molecules

What is endocytosis?

300

A cell where the concentration of sugar is 0.25% is placed in a solution with a sugar concentration of 1.25%. Is the solution hypotonic, hypertonic, or isotonic to the cell, and what will happen to the cell over time?

The solution is hypertonic to the cell, so the cell will shrivel up/shrink

400

The person who discovered that animals are made of cells

Who is Theodor Schwann?

400

Explain what would happen to a plant cell in a hypotonic solution

The cell would become turgid.

If the solution is hypotonic to the cell, there is more solute in the inside of the cell and a higher concentration outside. Water will flow into the cell due to the concentration gradient, and the cell will swell and become turgid. It will not explode because of the cell wall.

500

List the three parts of cell theory

1. All living things are made of cells

2. Cells are the basic unit of life

3. All cells come from preexisting cells

500

Explain why a cell membrane(phopholipid bilayer) is considered to be both fluid and mosiac

Fluid: phospholipids and membrane proteins move around in the membrane

Mosiac: composed of many different proteins on both sides of the membrane

500

Why would you die if you drank an excess of seawater?

There would be a very high concentration of salt outside your cells, making a hypertonic solution. To maintain equilibrium, water would flow from the inside of the cells to the outside, and your cells would shrivel up and die, causing your death.
