The cell membrane is made of how many layers of phospholipids?
Two
When molecules diffuse they always move from a ______ to _______ concentration.
high, low
Osmosis pertains specifically to the diffusion of ________.
water
How did we remove the shells on eggs in our egg lab?
vinegar
The energy of motion is ___________ energy.
kinetic
Explain what selectively permeable means.
Only some things are able to pass through.
Which two gases move in and out of our cells quickly by diffusion?
Oxygen Carbon Dioxide
Water always diffuses from a _____________ to a ___________ solution.
hypotonic. hypertonic
We dehydrated the onion cells with a ____________ solution.
Hypertonic
TRUE or FALSE
Molecules of a substance continue to move even though they are at equilibrium.
True
When substances move through the cell membrane without the cell having to use energy it is called _________________.
passive transport
When molecules of a substance are the same concentration throughout a given space we say that the substance is in ________________.
equilibrium
Unicellular freshwater organisms can have this kind of vacuole to help them pump out excess water when in hypotonic environments.
contractile
Draw what an onion cell looked like when a hypertonic solution was put on it.
Mrs. Schulz will check this.
A solution with less solute and more water than that of a cell would be a ____________ solution.
hypotonic
Draw what the phopholipids look like in the cell membrane.
Mrs. Schulz will check this.
A difference in concentration between two areas is called a ______________________.
concentration gradient
The bursting of a cell in a hypotonic solution is called ________.
cytolysis
Draw what red blood cells looked like in out lab for each of the following solutions.
Isotonic
Hypotonic
Hypertonic
Normal
Bigger or they burst
Smaller and misshapen
A red blood cell would burst if you put it in a _______________ solution.
hypotonic
Draw a phospholipid. Label the correct ends as hydrophobic and hydrophilic.
Mrs. Schulz will check.
Explain everything we did in the starch/IKI lab and how it demonstrated diffusion.
We put starch water in dialysis tubing and IKI and water in a beaker. The IKI was small enough to diffuse into the dialysis tubing and cause a color change. The starch molecules were too big to move out of the tubing.
When the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall when plant cells are in a hypertonic environment we say this occurs.
Plasmolysis
Explain how our egg lab demonstrated osmosis. Which solution was hypertonic and what happened? Which solution was hypotonic and what happened?
Corn syrup- hypertonic- pulled water out of the egg
Water- hypotonic- water went into the egg
Plants in hypotonic environments have a lot of ___________ pressure.
turgor
