What is the "Muscular System"?

The muscular system is responsible for the movement of the human body. It does this through constant contractions and relaxations of muscles to create the movement. There are three main types of muscles in the body, skeletal, smooth and cardiac which all serve a different purpose. The skeletal muscles are the group responsible for our bodies’ movement and are consciously used, smooth muscles control unconscious movements e.g. our stomach digesting or intestines moving etc. and cardiac muscle is our heart beating.

In addition to movement, our muscular system has many other purposes, such as:

  • Maintaining posture: such as sitting or standing, is maintained as a result of muscle contraction. The muscles need to make constant, fine adjustments to maintain these positions

  • Joint stability: the tendons of many muscles extend over the joints providing joint stability. This is particularly seen in the knee and shoulder joints, where the muscle tendons play a major role in stabilising the joint.

  • Heat production: to maintain body temperature through the muscle contractions. Nearly 85% of body temperature is a result of our muscle movements.

The temperature requirement for our muscles increases as we exercise, as the warmer our muscles are the freer our body moves without causing pain or injury.
